The Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board has adopted a new policy that forbids missionary candidates from speaking in tongues.
The policy, adopted Nov. 15 during the board's trustee meeting in Huntsville, Ala., reflects ongoing Southern Baptist opposition to charismatic or Pentecostal practices.

God wants his children to walk with the power. But some will chose not to do so.
Some will reach out and believe that touching their TV screen will heal them while watching TBN.
I have little interest in God giving me power. I watch for His power to manifest. It's all about Him, not about me.
I find it interesting that charismatics think they have some 'right' to bring their practices to churches that have always (and soundly) rejected them. Well, too bad, the SBC and any other Baptist conference, will continue to reject your mummery.

I have little interest in God giving me power. You have little interest in serving God.
You have little interest in following Christ.
Jhn 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Just admit it, you don't believe God or Christ and have no intent on following the teachings of Christ. No wonder you don't want spirit filled Christians around you to get in your plans to ruin your local congregation with your disbelief.
As a child of God and follower of Christ I have ever right, duty, and obligation to share God's plan of redemption through Christ and the power of Christ to those that believe.
Those that stand in the way will have to answer to God.

If God gives someone a word of wisdom or knowledge
or a revelation through the vehicle of "Speaking in Tongues"
and no one can give an interpretation then who benefits?
1 Corinthians 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,£ but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues,£ unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

you know I've heard all of your arguments against the Gifts we are hereto referring, but I have yet as to hear you bring scripture "in context" discounting the gift of the tongues. You have been presented though with several passages of scripture identifying our stance, and yet you still call it murmery, mumbling, and nonsense, and support your statements, solely based upon personal opinion, constitution and bylaws, and "The Baptist Faith and Order". I say though that if these documents, or statements are contrary to the word of God, then they have no place in a Christian Church, if we serve in a Christian church, we should base our beliefs, and practices solely upon the Bible, and no other source. Once again I do not say that the gift of tongues has any bearing upon ones personal salvation, nor should It be forced into any church, but no one should be excluded from a church family based solely upon their chosen worship outlet. Nor should you chastise anyone for their worship practices without scriptural Merritt. If you have scriptural foundation, (in context) then by all means PLEASE I would love to hear it, otherwise you are giving the baptist a bad face, because as Christians, we all should be able to support our beliefs with scripture.

Interesting. As a former Southern Baptist myself (and my father still a Southern Baptist minister), I do believe I would have fallen over if there was any speaking in tongues (unintelligible ones). It's just wasn't done in any Southern Baptist church I've ever attended. I was always taught (and rightly so I believe) that the tongues mentioned had to do with other known languages.
As for speaking during a prayer, one thing I have noticed over recent years was an almost under the breath spoken agreeing with the person actually praying by those within the congregation, which was a little disconcerting for me. I suppose if the person feels led to do that, it's their business. But one of the reasons I have left the Southern Baptist church for the Methodist church.

I'm sure that the point that you're making is that "in the church" speaking in tongues has a different role than in one's personal worship life.
As your post noted "in the church" it is better to use insprired utterances that can be understood for the benefit of all than inspired utterances that only benefit the speaker.
Charity/love/agape in this contex means serving the church (body of believers present) than oneself.
Critic use this section of scripture to denigrate the use of tongues by ignoring the context of this addressing actions "in the church".

But I'm sure there is an exemption clause in there somewhere for the SBC. That passage only forbids barring someone who happens to speak a foreign language, not from barring someone claiming to speak a "made up" language. Beside, what's your problem? If you don't accept the creed of the SBC, then leave those who do alone. Go find another denomination that you like.

my point in my statement is simply this, let each man worship God in the way that he would, to exclude someone from a church simple because he worships "worshiping the same God mind you" in a different way is absolutely ludicrous By that standard, you should allow Muslims in your service.

exactly how did I defend anti bible teachings? In fact if you read my statement, then you should realize that I asked for scripture. I teach and stand only on the word of God, I only ask the same from anyone else who calls them self a Christian.

I would if they were willing to repent and accept the teachings of the Bible, and acnowledge Jesus as the Christ.

Well there's no doubt with your excellent vocabulary
and wonderful Christ likeness you are certainly
on higher Spiritual level than any of us lowly Baptist.
Please turn to page 666 in your hymnals and all sing.
