The county school system is re-thinking its definition of sexual abstinence after complaints from two parents that their children were receiving incorrect and even risky information in sex ed classes.
Karen Sees and Cindy Richards said the contraception comparison chart used in eighth-grade health class at Herbert Hoover Middle School describes three types of abstinence: No intercourse, withdrawal (ejaculation outside of the body) and rhythm (no intercourse during ovulation).
Since when did the term abstinence change to include the two most ineffective forms of birth control possible? said Cindy Richards of Potomac. Here we have been teaching our kids that abstinence means not having sex, period. What kind of message is this [chart] sending?
Sees, also of Potomac, first became aware of the chart while helping her son study for health class in late October. She said she immediately e-mailed her sons health education teacher about her concerns.
Im all for teaching sex education, but I want it to be accurate information, she said. I was told by my sons health teacher that withdrawal and rhythm are considered abstinence because [sexual partners] are refraining from what they want to do.
Both Planned Parenthood of Maryland and the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington agreed with the parents that the definition was faulty.

Why can't they speak the obvious truth:
Abstinence is refraining from any contact with the private parts of another person. Period.
In "Stranger Danger" lessons, the private parts are simply defined as those that would be covered by your bathing suit.
How hard is it to teach that?
;-)
Please stop defining words to suit your own perverted needs. This ain't Wonderland and you ain't Humpty Dumpty.
Thanks.
I would call abstinence the lack of penetration.
By that I mean Penetration of the Oral, Anal and Vaginal orifice by the partners sexual equipment.
I dont call stroking or fondling a sexual act. Foreplay although it gets one into some pretty big sweats at times is not the sexual act.
The chart must have been designed by Slick "I-didn't-have-sex" Willy.
I don't like your definition.
Did you ever try to eat just ONE potato chip?
People in this country worry too much about who's having sex with whom. That said, a sex ed program that doesn't define "abstinence" accurately is pretty sad.
Laws against rape and child molestation require you to abstain from sexual relations with the other person. How much "abstinence" is involved?
Running around the bases is still playing around even if you don't go "home".
How is oral (3rd base) not permissible while mutual masturbation (2nd base) is?
The sex positive agenda seeks to lift all moral judgement regardless of sex, age, relation, marital status, or number or species of partner.
Hardly something the schools should be indoctrinating students with.
Welcome to FR.
I think I mentioned penetration.
Man thats a good straight line for a joke, but I'll let it slide.
Newspeak lives.
Well, actually, the second and third least effective. The least effective being intercourse and just playing the odds against pregnancy- "Poke and Hope"- if you will.
STOOPID!
Indeed! And all his apologists. No wonder there has been an explosion of oral sex between middle and high school students.
True.
I don't know how they think they've brought abstinence into the picture.
I don't worry about that. This is about children and what their parents should know. They're paying for this and these are their children.
Uh..... no fooling.
You and me both. I'm flabbergasted, actually.
