CAIRO, Egypt — Leaders of Iraq's sharply divided Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis called Monday for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces in the country and said Iraq's opposition had a "legitimate right" of resistance.

The final communique, hammered out at the end of three days of negotiations at a preparatory reconciliation conference under the auspices of the Arab League, condemned terrorism, but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if their operations do not target innocent civilians or institutions designed to provide for the welfare of Iraqi citizens.

"I don';t give a rat's arse about whether it's three words or two words or one word when they say that killing an American soldier is acceptable if it's a "militant"."

Please quote that section of the article for me. I must have missed where the Iraqi leaders said it was ok to kill American soldiers.

"...this is just the start of the ultimate clash. With islam, there must be war and there can be only one winner. Either islam (real islam) comes to dominate the world...or it is defeated and expunged."

Yep! "War on Terror" is PC for "counteroffensive response to islams renewed (and centuries-old) efforts to dominate or subjugate all others".

"Is there any relationship beteen the Iraqis who agreed to this document, and the Iraqi government? "

NONE. ZERO. ZIPPO.

This is a scam-conference where baathists and their supporters got to spout off, courtesy of the Arab league, a POS organization trying to hamper democracy in the region ... the REAL governing of Iraq is happening by the Iraqi government.

"I do not want to sound arrogant but I know more about Middle Eastern politics than most people on this forum because I was born and raised in Lebanon for 22 years and I lived there during the 15 years of civil war. I completely understand Arab mentality and thinking. This communiqué does not say at all that the insurgent terrorist groups have the right to attack US and Iraqi forces. They made a three word statement about “the right of people for resistance” they did not even mention the word resistance to occupation. In the Arab world people do a lot of lip service and that is one of them as simple as that."

Well said.

"This is their way of saying thanks? You can't trust arabs or muslims, and this makes that point crystal clear."

It really doesn't matter what they say. If they want us to leave, good riddance. We leave. And in fact, we should leave more quickly than their time table calls for, to keep terrorists off-balance.

We won a lot of hearts and a lot of minds. Being asked to leave and politely going out the door is not cowardice by any means. No matter what happens, our military touched the hearts of millions and millions of people.

If Iraq goes to hell in a handbasket [and I think they will actually break the yoke of Islamic extremism and become Sin City of the Middle East, based on what's in the Book of Revelation], the worse it gets in Iraq in later years, the more they will wish that the US was still there. This may have been their brief, shining moment of Camelot, an ideal for them to aspire to.

No matter what happens, Bush can say, we toppled an evil regime. That's what's most important. The world knows that no tin pot dictator can scare us away with chemical weapons. No enemy of our's feels safe. Side with bin Laden, celebrate 9-11-01, and dare to draw our attention your way AT YOUR PERIL.

Well said. I have not been following this posting. But your statements are well taken. We cannot expect these peoples in all their varied theocratic, ideological, social/political differences to just band together under one theme and go along with what the US may ask of them.
It is totally unwise to assume we can dictact to them. We can only suggest and offer continued help to move forward, and become stable.
Most of the objectives have been meet. The Iraqi's must now as many of us understand, take charge and finalize the final goal, being a freely elected stable government willing to govern all their people under a new constitutional system of laws. And work hard at that final military level (perhaps by the end of 2006) to take full charge of their internal security needs.
How they accomplish this should be their business. Hopefully with the new military in place with many close and now warm ties with us, their government leadership shall be forced to not turn on the US and main coalition forces's desire to partner with them.
As any endevour of this dimension, there are always risks all will not go as planned. It seldom does.

Yes. Freedom of speech is a a double edged sword. Learn to use their own words against them. Save this report. File it. Cherish it. because they exposed themselves for what they are. I oppose the Clintons, which is why I have the following quote in my tagline. And God bless the Kurds!

Good point. Friendships have been forged. Countless bonds. We are networked there. And this report is just Arab League
hype. FRegards....

Perhaps we should take the recent lesson of the US House of Representatives charades on an early or immediate pull out and the resultant 403 to 3 vote. A lot of public haranging with little effect.
Should we expect any more from Iraqi politicians? We can tend to forget a lot of stuff still must be put in place for the Iraqi Army and Security forces. Those that think we are just going to pull out, are sadly mistaken in my opinion. Who are they going to go to for future weapon systems and training. To many think it is a cut and dry thing, we leave on a given date. Nothing could be more misleading. Yes our main fighting forces will withdraw, but they have some nasty neighbors, Syria and Iran. And I think it is totally under-estimating the Iraqi's to think they just want the US to pull out and leave them on their own.

They keep using the term "leaders" not the "Iraqi government."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the "leaders" they are speaking about are most likely Mullahs.
