Residents are up in arms over a push by the Education Department to open a school next door to a popular Bay Ridge shooting range. The school, proposed inside the recently shuttered Fortway Theater on Fort Hamilton Parkway, would bring about 440 students within earshot of the 40-year-old Alpine Arms shooting range - an FBI and NYPD favorite.

"We're trying to get children away from guns, not near them," said Donna Sbordone, a mother of three who lives three blocks from the 67th St. site. "It's just not a good place for a school."

What a glass-half-empty twit!

What do you think the crime rate is in such a neighborhood, honey?

One would think that the FBI people (or at least some of them) are among those more qualified to use firearms in the proper fashion. Thus FBI range ought to be considered as a better kind of neighbor.

Hunting season is going on now and not only is our whole community within earshot, it's probably the kids from the local public school who are doing the shooting. My kids have told me that all they hear about these days is the other kids plans to go hunting with each other. Great community, nice local kids, safe to walk on the streets at night,...

I am sure that once the school opens these pantywaists will try and get the firing range shut down.

Clearly what those dingbat parents are afraid of is that their kids will get interested. "Hey Mom, can I learn to shoot, huh?" Puts parents like that on the spot to realize that learning to shoot is not just a cool thing but an excellent discipline and a good step in the process of maturation, but for some reason they're afraid of it. I got my first chance to shoot in the Boy Scouts (one of the guys' Dads owned a range). Wonderful experience; more kids should have the opportunity.

Unless they allow Bears in.

It's such a horrible place that this mother of three lives three blocks from it. The article also says that it's underground. Shut up lady.

My old high school had a firing range in the basement, and a competitive marksmanship team (Junior ROTC)

Public schools are filled with the arrogance of those with too much power over our children. It's time to take it away from them for good. Challenge the inclusion of public schools under the commerce clause.

That's better than what passes for PE these days.

It's an underground indoor range. They won't "hear" anything. She's probably afraid kids will read the sign "Shooting range".
Dingbats, they are everywhere.

I've got an off-topic question

My daughter is 5. I'm trying to figure out when she should have her first gun safety course and when she should have her first shooting course. I've been hesitant about buying a gun for the home because I don't want to put her at risk (until she's properly trained in it's use and handling).

Unfortunately I'm not the hunting type, neither the time nor the opportunity as a single dad, so I'm starting at a handicap here.

So, How do I start?

Just to clarify everything for non New Yorkers here... This range is in Brooklyn- so im not suprised to hear that people are upset. We need to consider the source and remember that NYC is the mecca of political correctness in our country (along with other large cities). I belong to a shooting range up in the mountains of NY and we havent had any complaints that i know about. I own many guns and i hunt and this type of crap makes me sick.

The people b!thcing and complaining here are a bunch of pissy whiney yuppie vegetarian tofu fartin political correct city slickers that have no idea what middle america thinks or how people up in the mountains of ny think. Look at the county by county map of NY from last year and you will see that alot of NY counties are red with the exception of the cities (NYC, Albany, Buffano, and a few others).

To the political correct soccer mom's- go suck on a lemon.

Start with a BB gun. Seriously. I started my daughters on BB guns when they were 4 years old. Treat it just exactly like a more powerful firearm, lock up the "ammo", lock up the gun or trigger lock, only shoot with an adult, never point at anything you don't intend to shoot, etc. You can set up a range right in the house and you can practice together. You'll know when (if) she's ready to move on to something more powerful. One daughter was interested the other 2 weren't. Bottom line, none of them are afraid of guns.
