WASHINGTON -- The Republican lawmaker who helped guide the GOP to an expanded majority in the House three years ago warned yesterday that a Supreme Court ruling overturning a woman's legal right to an abortion -- a possibility if the high court shifts further to the right -- could hurt his party's political prospects and cause a ''sea change" in suburban voting habits.
Representative Tom Davis of Virginia, who chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee through the 2002 election, said that if the Supreme Court threw out Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that established that abortion rights were protected by the Constitution, ''you're going to have a lot of very nervous suburban candidates."
At a breakfast gathering of reporters, Davis said Republicans have a political cushion with voters as long as Roe is intact. Currently, ''you can be prolife and no one feels that's a threat to someone having to make a difficult decision" if abortion is illegal, he said.

"Davis said Republicans have a political cushion with voters as long as Roe is intact"
Yeah, Mister Davis. Why don't you tell 'Republican' guys to marry those girls and a lot of them would be thrilled to keep those kids.
Get a spine and a Bible, Sir.
The guy is apparently an idiot.
Overturning Row v. Wade doesn't not make it illegal. It simply means states can do as they please with the issue. As if California or New York would be any different than they are now - short of forcing tax payers to pay for them as a "right".
Could these idiots be any more out of touch? And these are the folks people think will stand behind George Bush on any grand battle for conservative court justices?
The guy is absolutely correct. He sees the price to pay, and does not like it. And who could blame him?
Yeah, Davis, I'm more concerned about your maintaining membership at some exclusive country club than I am about innocent babies being butchered. Selfish coward.
Sounds like a compromise is in order. How about we make a law that says an unborn baby is 3/5ths of a born one?
All these Republicans coming out against President Bush are a bunch of chickens who should be shown the door. They lack total character. One comes out for the ouster of Tom Delay another comes out for a new windfall tax and now one comes out who is pro abortion. They all ought to keep their mouths shut. They would not be in the positionthat they are in if it weren't for leaders like Tom Delay.
And I would like to see the reaction of these US liberal when the day arrives with news like this:
"Rep. Mohammad Al Hussein (D-MI) is calling a review of the current arrangemnt of abortion in the United States, stating that any abortion after 40 days is contrary to Islamic teachings. 'It is well past the time for the United States honor Islamic values by stopping the practice of massacring infants. This is an adomination under the eyes of Allah.' The Inam of the Dearborn Muslim Mosque at Dearborn Heights threatens to issue fatwas to any US congress member who don't support overturning Roe vs Wade."
You want backlash? If Roberts, Alito and other nominees turn out to be pro-Roe Tony Kennedy clones, Mr Davis will see the real backlash.
Or, it could be overturned, abortion would go back to the states, and we could have the debate we always wanted about the proper role of the federal government and the limits of the bill of rights.
Instead, we get these nutless wonders wringing their hands.
"And who could blame him?"
People with actual principles?
Gee I feel terrible for him... So what if others who can't actually speak for themselves are the ones paying the price with their lives.
I won't have a long debate with you about it because we both know it's a waste of our time.
Then they are not fit to be "GOP leaders." They are not even fit to be dogcatcher if they fear what will happen if they do the job they were hired to do!
Well, abortion is disgusting, but it is here to stay. Even overturning Roe will only buy us some traditional-thinking states, the rest will go on as before, I fear.
;o)
It would mean a lot fewer conservatives would be elected to state legislatures and governorships, because most voters want to keep abortion legal. Sure. Overturning Roe might prevent some abortions in Mississippi, but it wouldn't do Gov. Romney any good in Massachusetts.
BTW, Roe doesn't have anything to do with who pays for abortions.
I actually disagree.
I think abortion will go the way of slavery.
It will be seen by some future generation as the evil practice it is. It will cause shame when looked back upon, the same way we look back on slavery now.
It took a war to free the slaves. I pray it doesn't take a war to free the children.
Conservatives who voted for Republicans based on pro-life promises, that's who.
Bottom line: if the Republicans aren't going to stand up for the core issues of the platform, then there's no point in believing they'll stand up for any issues of import. In short, they'll be nothing but RINO pushovers that the Democrats know they can boss around on any issue.
That ain't what we signed up for.
