That must have been hard for Villepin to do. I imagine he took a 3 hour steam bath afterwards to wash the smell of peasants off his skin.

No, but the "heavy and oppressive" part almost certainly is.

Is this like one of Rummy or Bush's surprise appearances in Iraq? Gotta come in without advanced notice, move quickly and then get the heck out, for security reasons. Does the French government realize how effectively this bolsters the perception of France as a war torn country?

Première visite de Villepin en banlieue...
To: Dallas59
162 was the early number for last night - the later tally was 215...
215 véhicules avaient été incendiés et 71 interpellations ont été enregistrées dans la nuit de lundi à mardi dans les banlieues françaises. La DGPN parle d'"un retour à une situation quasi-normale".

rioting by youths who feel excluded from mainstream society. They are particularly pissed because they do not wish to integrate with French society; and French society refuses to integrate with them to make them feel "included".

dans la nuit de lundi My French is rusty to nonexistential. Does that phrase translate as,
"the nightly dance of the Lunatics"?
Is 'lunatics' an AFP code phrase for "cult of moon rock worshippers"?
