(VANITY) What is the best gun for a beginner?

Posted on 11/14/2005 12:10:39 PM PST by Minus_The_Bear

I've grown up in Oklahoma and went through Boy Scouts (am an Eagle Scout) learning to shoot various types of firearms but haven't even touched one in 5+ years. Now that I'm about to leave college I'm thinking of getting a firearm of some kinda but don't know where to start.

What should I be looking at and why?

Depends on what you want it for. A little more info would help.

Start with what is comfortable and inexpensive... don't by a gun just for a name first...... that being said Ruger is one of the best built guns you can get... perhaps the p89 9mm or p95 9mm also.

I think a medium sized, medium caliber revolver such as a .38 special is pretty much considered the ideal beginners gun. I think that conventional wisdom is correct too.

The most important question is: What use do you plan to make of this firearm? Answer that, and we can help.

A Smith and Wesson M686 revolver. Uses both .38 Special and .357 Magnum ammunition. Learn to shoot with a revolver first, them move onto autos.

The first hand gun that I ever bought was a Rugar P89. Still own it and still love it.

A .357 mag revolver with a four inch barrel would be a good starting point. You can shoot .38s out of it as well for reduced recoil. S&W 686 or Ruger GP-100 are two models of this.
