House GOP leaders agreed last night to strip plans to permit oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in the offshore continental shelf from a $54 billion budget-cutting measure, probably securing the votes to pass the bill today.
The move is a blow to President Bush, who has made expanded oil exploration a priority since he took office. Lawmakers said the White House applied pressure yesterday to Republicans to save the drilling provisions, especially in Alaska, even wooing conservative Democrats who have steadfastly opposed the GOP budget package.

I think you hit the nail on the head. If Hastert doesn't step up to the plate and show he's got cojones, this spells major doom for the rightwing. We might as well bow now to queen hitlery and insane coward dean.
There is hope though when the Senate/House meeting takes place. It's not over by any means..just another aggravation by these moronic RINOS who need to be reigned in.
90% of the House GOP is for drilling, this is being spearheaded by charlie bass(RINO-NH), but it is so much easier to knee jerk isn't it.
Oh, no...you don't understand. This is a tactic, or strategy, to confuse and distort the electorate. You see, the Pubes will say that they withdrew the drilling for the people, saving us "Kachillions in tax dollars".
All along, knowing that they were goin' down on the all mighty and powerful Oz.
Why don't you step up to the plate, charlie bass's phone and fax # are there in reply #32 for you to call and express your displeasure, but you would rather kneejerk.

This is a RINO(charlie bass) giving into the envirowhackos, but you would rather not do your research and go kneejerk.

Just one more reason I'm no longer a slavish Republican voter. I'm a conservative, period.
Hate to say it but I have lost all faith in our "Republican" "Leadership"
Idiots don't seem to ever want to stand up for what I believe in....Fight dammit you have the FRIGGIN majority!!!!!!!!!!!
" 90% of the House GOP supports drilling, "
Does that include the Florida delegation which may support ANWR but goes NIMBY when it comes to the Florida coast?
My additional thought: The national reserve should be doubled....One for the people, one for National Emergency.
I'm with Thermalseeker on this - I don't donate to the GOP anymore.
I've been wondering if the Republican Party is due for some serious losses. The GOP has abandoned its value system and lost its focus and what little backbone it had in the mid 90's under Gingrich.
Though the idea makes me ill, it may take a few years of the new People's Republic of Amerika under Hitlery to wake them up. God help us if our supposedly "conservative" leaders are that dense and truly abandon us.
If it loses and we are the majority, then "our" guys aren't doing the job, are they? And why doesn't our President do what those before him have done, call in our representatives and organize a strategy for victory? This type of effort is lacking in a variety of issues, giving power to "independents", and "moderates." A prime example of this is Bush's support in my state for Spector over Tomey.
Couldn't have said it better, myself. (Although I might have used different punctuation and capitalization...)
There isn't a doubt in my mind that the Democans and Republicrats are playing a shell game with us, and I've had enough.
Don't worry too much; they'll open it next year. GOP doesn't want the budget held up, and voting to open ANWR in, say, February will be touted as an election year victory for Republicans. I have a feeling this is more strategic than surrender. The House (not the Senate) has been pretty Conservative these days.
I am so angry I could spit nails! They beg for our money and votes then expect us to go away for 2-4-6 years. The GOP now stands for Game Over Party, for they have given up to the Dark Side............
