GOP to Strike Arctic Drilling From House Bill
The Washington Post ^ | November 10, 2005 | Jonathan Weisman

Posted on 11/10/2005 4:59:13 AM PST by The Hound Passer

House GOP leaders agreed last night to strip plans to permit oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in the offshore continental shelf from a $54 billion budget-cutting measure, probably securing the votes to pass the bill today.

The move is a blow to President Bush, who has made expanded oil exploration a priority since he took office. Lawmakers said the White House applied pressure yesterday to Republicans to save the drilling provisions, especially in Alaska, even wooing conservative Democrats who have steadfastly opposed the GOP budget package.

With a GOP like this who needs the Dems?

Exactly what I've been saying for several years.

The GOP has gotten it's last dime from me until they start actually standing up for what they claim to believe in.....

Dennis Hastert: Phone: 202-225-2976, Fax: 202-225-0697

Actually you should put charlie bass's phone and fax # up there. He is the one who is spearheading this, but you would rather blame Hastert, who is for the drilling.

Why am I not surprised at yet another spineless move by GOP Senators?

God, please let the Constitution Party gain power so we can rid ourselves of these GOP pansies and Dem subversives! Amen!

"But you would rather bash Hastert rather than the true roadblockers the enviorwhackos."

But.....it's people like him who give them power over this issue by his actions or inaction.

Gee why don't you actually call the person spearheading this, charlie bass(RINO-NH). Oh that would take some actual research on your part. It is so much easier to go kneejerk isn't it.

I am getting weary of this

There used to be a time when I believed they would do something like this to revisit something at a more advantageous time.

Now I just think they are truly earning the "Stupid Party" label

The Republicans are not in good shape. They abandoned the base and, now that things are getting bumpy, they are trying to become Democtat-lite's, thinking that they need to move in that direction. Hey, Republicans, the people that elected you reject any leftward thinking. If you try to capture the center by moving left, you are handing the keys to your office to your Deomcrat rival!

Seems this weeks elections have sent the message to the GOP that they are vulnerable and had better not push anything with controversy.

That is called a prevent defence and it never works.

This has to be the stupidest thing I have ever read about the House GOP. Are these guys conservatives?

Maybe this happened because Tom Delay is not there.

Are they trying to lose their base? What a bunch of idiots.

I agree however..>Hastert being the leader should be able to work with all of them to come to a consensus. The majority leader and the whip needs to reign in these rogues. This spells doom for the GOP bigtime if it's allowed to fester like this.

I have the same problem with Frist and the senate...he doesn't appear to be able to reign them in, either. I don't know who these morons are for anymore..it's certainly not for the GOP. They seem to all be dimwits lately.

Yes, this is outrageous. Yep, let's blame the oil companies for not drilling, and at the same time refuse to let them drill in Alaska (and many other federal lands, and offshore locations), and not let them build new refineries either (because of govt environmental regulations).

Then for good measure let's mandate local 'blend requirements' (which add about 10 cents a gallon), and top it off with an average of 50 cents a gallon in taxes--(18.5 federal, average of about the same in state tax, and with city, county and other taxes added it is a national average of about 50 cents).

Yep, when it comes to high energy prices, IT'S ALL THE OIL COMPANIES' FAULT! (rolling eyes, sarcasm--off)

UNBELIEVABLE.

This has to be the stupidest thing I have ever read about the House GOP. Are these guys conservatives?

90% of them are for drilling, this is being spearheaded by charlie bass, his phone # and FAX # are in reply #32.

I'd gladly forgo Arctic drilling in favor of new refinery construction. The US has not had a new refinery built since the 70's. What good is crude if we don't have the capacity for refining it?

Just like the Mier's nomination (an attempt to avoid conflict) and open borders, energy, taxes, Growing Government..all show our GOP congress and Whitehouse are just another side of ONE PARTY, there is no Republican or Democrat party only 2 ruling families who share power..wake up conservatives they will sell us out every time. a final example S Burger- stole top secret documents and destroyed same- admitted in court to doing it and is he in jail NO..or Cheney having MARC RICH's lawyer as his chief of staff..can they show any clearer what the game is in Washington all about being an elite and just using Dem and Republican voters to KEEP POWER.
