Excellent. Sarkozy is the only one who has a spine. But then again, he's the son of Hungarian immigrants.

Regards, Ivan

That - also - a 1,000 euros in new up-front money, plus and extra 150 euros a month for a year to the "unemployed youth"

Sarkozy's not the only one with a spine.
He's the only one in the UMP government with a spine.

Jean Marie Le Pen, for all of his unpleasant qualities, certainly has a spine!

And so does Philippe de Villiers.

I am telling you, watch Villiers. He came out of the European Constitution vote looking very good.

Ya know, with all the talk of how at current birth rates Muslims(many unassimilating) will make up a majority of those born in France within a few decades, perhaps we would be wise to appeal to blue staters to do their patriotic duty and save the liberal homelands. Encourage culturally superior Californians and Northeasterners to immigrate to France, lest it be overwhelmed and lose its identity. Remind them that they must save their utopias if they want to continue to hold those countries up as what we uncouth ignorants here should emulate.

Right. And they're gonna identify these guys, who just as an aside, wear burkas, how?

Either way, yet another failure to realize the actual problem and not react to a symptom.

AFAIK, most of these "youths" are descendants of legal immigrants who attained French citizenship legally back in the 50s and 60s. While I'm sure many are recent immigrants and some even illegal, most are 2nd or 3rd generation and quite legal.

He's a politician who has taken a strong conservative stance, opposed European integration at the expense of French sovereignty, and opposed immigration.

He gained high visibility during the debates over thge European Constitution.

Unlike Le Pen, with his various troubles and outrageous statements, Villiers is a smooth, handsome aristocrat who has not made unfortunate statements. Also, Villiers is young. He will be in politics for a long time. I believe he will rise.

I never liked Dominique de Villepin, but I have to say that as Prime Minister he has shown a flexibility and a capacity to learn that suprises me. He will be a formidable presidential candidate, I think.

I would not be surprised if the Presidentials in 2007 are a match-up between de Villepin and de Villiers. Of course, I also won't be surprised if Le Pen is on the ticket again, since he has been the longest standing voice against immigrants.

I was wondering about the same thing. All news websites have the same 10-15 photos and that's it.

Where are the photo-bloggers of the internet age?

I guess I didn't phrase it clearly. If a woman who is illegally residing in France bears a child in France to a man who is also illegally residing in France, is that child automatically a French citizen? In America the answer is "Yes." But is the answer the same in France?

I don't suppose there's still a Pretender kicking around, is there? France could do worse.

From what I have read most already have been "convicted" in what is some form of French "super-speedy" trial by judge - i.e. those actually caught in the offending act.

Just off the Reuters wire, including the odd parenthetical...

(Recasts with fresh rioting)

By Matthew Bigg

PARIS, Nov 9 (Reuters) - France imposed emergency measures on Wednesday in 38 suburbs, towns and cities including Paris but in a 14th night of violence youths clashed with police in a southwestern city and four cars were burned.

It was not immediately clear how widespread the new violence was. Earlier, police said the unrest that had spread across many of France's towns and cities and shaken the government appeared to be waning.

I have read news accounts of several different TV crews being attacked and their vehicles burned. I also read an anecdotal account that no one but a few Muslim/Algerian press outlets are able to operate un-harrassed in the Banlieus (suburbs). And last night a newspaper headquarters building was attacked. So, yeah, there is some serious intimidation of the press happening on the streets, but that is combined with official suppression of the news as well. A double whammy.
