re: conservatives much less republicans not turning out when so much was at stake, the question that remains to be answered is why indeed. aren't there like 5 of 5.5 million registered?

Maybe they were afraid of all the union thugs and rabid abortion liberals. It was safer to stay home. Those people can be dangerous when their religion is threatened.

The Republican party in this state is dysfunctional -- it works only in rare circumstances that happen to be just right. There is a lot of stupidity, a lot of selfishness, and a huge amount of laziness, not to mention cowardice.
An ugly picture, and tonight's disastrous results won't help.

Actually, San Francisco County isn't very big (760,000). Alameda and Santa Cruz are both about double the size of SF county. Marin (250,000) is largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of California elections (just like they should be on everything else).

The last best hope - and hope is all we got now - is 75, which currently sits at 49.3% with 72.7% of the vote counted.

72% of precincts reporting statewide. 50.9% vote no on 73. 50.7% vote no on 75. Lotsa votes yet to be counted from libbie strongholds. This is starting to look like a bloodbath.

Yup, unless L.A. County somehow comes around on 73. I doubt it, though.

As for the "conservative areas," what is their major malfunction that they're so "conservative," but can't be bothered to vote for conservative issues? Answer me that one.

I don't know. Resentment for Schwarzenegger? General apathy? Unaware there was an election going on? Never knew much about the issues? I don't have a peep into their heads and can't tell you. I'd like to know why myself.

Depends on what you consider "social liberal" because some consider his stand on homosexuals to be a make of being a "social liberal" while it hasn't got anything to do with fiscal policy.

That's a good example of a socially liberal issue that has no apparent fiscal impact. Sadly, every other socially liberal issue I can think of has a fiscal impact spanning from abortion to gun control.

His "brand" of "social liberal" means he's not afraid to spend the People's money on the things the People need but not over do it.

I don't know if I buy that. Remember that Arnold borrowed several billions of dollars via support of a bond measure to put California in the job of embryonic stem cell research. That was billions (with a 'b') of dollars added to this state's already burgeoning debt just to finance a Mengelesque pro-abort Liberal pet project. In that alone, Arnold way "over did it."

The problem tonight and, generally, aren't "the Dems" because the legislature and union bureaucracy are not mainstream Democrats. They're no less than outrageous radicals.

You know that and I know that, but nobody in Sacramento seems to make a point about it. And thus only our side gets marginalized as "fringe"...even by people who claim to be Republicans themselves.

He's not getting any credit for working with them any more than Bush has gotten any credit for working with Ted Kennedy on "No child left behind." No Republican is ever going to get credit for that. Even if Arnold had given $5 billion more in education spending, not $3 billion, they'd attack him just as vigorously.

This is, in my opinion, due to a ridiculous lack of spine in our Republican "leadership." They need to stop taking it and start dishing it out for a change. Enough with letting the Leftists set the tone. We need to hit them hard enough to get them rocked back on their heels for a change. This "playing nice" is yielding no dividends. None.

Arnold gives a 10% budget hike to the Dems and they scream that it's a "budget cut" because he didn't give them the 20% increase that they wanted. I'd like to see a "fiscal Conservative / social Liberal" make it in that environment.

In the example you've given, a fiscal convervative / social conservative would fail as well. However, if the core Republican Party in CA actually had Arnie's back, he might have been able to do something. However, most of the "true conservatives" in the party simply turned their back on him.
