State of Emergency Declared in France

President Jacques Chirac declared a state of emergency Tuesday, paving the way for curfews to be imposed on riot-hit cities and towns in an extraordinary measure to halt France's worst civil unrest in decades after 12 nights of violence.

Police, meanwhile, said overnight unrest Monday-Tuesday, while still widespread and destructive, was not as violent as previous nights.

"The intensity of this violence is on the way down," National Police Chief Michel Gaudin said, citing fewer attacks on public buildings and fewer direct clashes between youths and police. He said rioting was reported in 226 towns across France, compared to nearly 300 the night before.

"The intensity of this violence is on the way down," ...

Good deduction, based on a sampling with N equal to 1.

What's that arabic word used by the PA to describe a temporary truce, while the "insurgents" continue arming, plotting, building/stocking more incendiary devices... until the next surge of violence? Sounds like there may be some "Hudna" going on here...

Has anyone noticed the rioters aren't reported as looting?

The entitlement chromosome isn't prevalent in France...yet.

"But, the good news is that a lot of those burned car owners had insured with "Geico"."

It's better news if they're Renaults!

The question is - do you let this fire burn itself out and contain it - or - do you attack it, and run the risk of making it flame up even more.

Confrontation is the best course of action, unless one is fond of being manipulated by fire.

Thoughtful post.

What do you think of the suggetion made by a poster on another thread that someofthe reluctance to crack down is based on business associations by wealthy French with Arabs/Muslims?

I agree that letting is burn itself out is a fairly viable option. No reported looting and very low level of reported violence against persons.

After 12 days, French leadership finally asserts itself, telling the violent arsonists "go to bed!"

All the Youths down in Youth-ville hated Christians a lot.
But the Frinch– who all lived in Paris, just north of Youth-ville– did not.

Or, more precisely, they kept Christ at arm’s length
Understanding completely France’s “secular strength.”

"The question is - do you let this fire burn itself out and contain it - or - do you attack it, and run the risk of making it flame up even more. "

That's only a question if you're French. Containment is right next door to appeasement. I believe they wanted to "contain" the Nazis.
This is an issue you have to attack, and aggressively slap down. And if it flares up elsewhere, it's something that was going to happen sooner or later anyway. Better to deal with them now, then later, when they are 25% of the population.

That can't be it...these guys are getting all sorts of entitlements or they'd be scrounging for food, not rioting.

I heard they were going to "taunt them a second time, then fart in their general direction."

Any word on that plan?

---The Gauls have no balls and the Muslims know it.---

Well, Chirac is a toothless old woman. That's certainly been proved, but things could swing wildly in the opposite direction. Leftist paradise could become fascist dictatorship in the blink of a political eye. Consider Napoleon, Franco, Mussolini, Hitler. History is full of instances where hopeless, incompetent governments are replaced by their opposite almost overnight.
