That's only a question if you're French. Containment is right next door to appeasement. I believe they wanted to "contain" the Nazis.
This is an issue you have to attack, and aggressively slap down. And if it flares up elsewhere, it's something that was going to happen sooner or later anyway. Better to deal with them now, then later, when they are 25% of the population.

You might be right - I honestly just don't know.

Every instinct I have says attack attack attack.

I have to beleive that there is some level of mental calculation here - as much as we love to ridicule the French leadership - they are not without the ability to reason - after all - this is their country this is happening to.

I just offer the possibility that they are calculating a no-win situation.
