My Fellow FReepers,

As it now past midnight (well at least for those of us in Central Standard Time) and I did a general search and couldn't find a single thread dedicated to election 2005, I have taken the liberty of creating one.

THIS is the place to post all your updates and discussions on '05 races around the country. From the Boston Mayoral Race to the fight for Virginia Attorney General, keep the adrenaline flowing here.

Will the GOP make a midterm gubernatorial comeback after suffering through the 2001 "mistakes" of McGreeley and Mark Warner? Will Ahnuld, the CA Dummycrats, or independent minded conservatives emerge triumph in California's latest (but not greatest!) "special election"? Will the liberal incumbent crush his equally liberal challenger in New York? And do conservatives even care?

Let's get the discussion rolling folks. You heard it here first!

If I was Queen for a Day I would mandate that all Congressional districts be defined by dropping a mesh grid from the sky and then pulling the cords of the mesh until the equal number of constituents was inside each "square". No letter shaped or strings of beads shaped districts at all.

Every district a truly competitive one. Then our reps would really have to pretend a bit more that they were interested in "the will of the people."

Umm, isn't a vote by the people to approve the constitutional amendment being held *today*?

Generally speaking, I do not like "non-partisan redistricting committees" (like the one in Iowa), but in the case of California, where the GOP will likely not get control of the state legislature for several decades (if ever), it might be our only chance of getting relatively fair districts drawn.

I took off from work a half hour early today to go and vote at the local elementary school here in Loudoun County, Northern Virginia. I proudly casted my vote for Kilgore, Bolling, McConnell, and Craddock.0 On the propositions I voted Yes to give money to renovate the local fire department and No on about the dozen or so issues about building new schools. Hells Bells, like we don't have enough expansion in Loudoun County.

Speaking for myself, yes. I don't like non-partisan redistricting commissions, but when it comes to California I'll make an exception because the Democrat legislature will likely draw districts in 2010 that will make the legislature and congressional delegation 75% Democrat for years to come. California is also more susceptible to a Democrat partisan gerrymander because they can draw a lot of districts with very few eligible voters because of its high Hispanic population.

You NO on 77 voters are probably gerrymandered into as safe district with a rep that represents your conservatives views.

Probably. But they are still getting worked over anyway. A candidate with a "safe seat" never has to be accountable to his or her constituents.

last night on the news, heard Kaine say they were prepared for all eventualities, including a FLorida-2000 situation .. so they were now prepared to challenge the validity of a Kilgore win before the first non-absentee vote was cast.

I just voted in North Texas (Dallas Suburb), stood in line for an hour and 15 minutes. There were only 7 voting machines and the workers said it was busy like this all day. Most were voting for Prop 2 marriage protection amendment.

When I left the line was even longer than when I got there. I expect the gay and alternate lifestyle lobby to suffer a resounding defeat.

Just heard on WTOP-AM here in DC....turnout is solid across all of VA, except in Northern VA where it is lighter than expected. Definitely good news for Kilgore!

oh, that would IS great news .... when I got the 5th or 6th requisite GOP-GOTV call, a lovely young lady told me 'turnout is light in your area" and I was THRILLED ! And, we can hope the Pottsheads come home. Thanks for the update.

so they were now prepared to challenge the validity of a Kilgore win before the first non-absentee vote was cast.

That would normally make me assume that they had internal polling indicating they might be losing this one.

But today has seen me far more nervous than I expected I would be six months ago.

I guess we'll know soon enough.

Well..now there is this from Redstate.org:

The Hotline reports that two Democratic sources say "that turnout in African American precincts around Richmond, Roanoke and Charlotesville are higher than projections... Dems are also seeing higher than projected turnout in white NoVA precincts... GOP data suggests the opposite -- that white voters are not turning out in sufficient enough numbers in NoVA to pad Kaine's totals."

Well, this is good news...according to redstate.org, some Democrats are phoning local media to complain that their votes were not being counted by the touch screens. Dem whining is a sure sign of success!

I voted today here in Missouri.

Special election for State Representative - District 150.

Jason Smith - Republican - young, dorky looking.

Bobby Simpson - Dem - Four-term Dent County Commissioner -older, votes to give self and others on the commission raises - just voted ANOTHER one on Oct. 22nd.

Dr. Brent Caudill - Libertarian - scumbag - I'd rather die then get treated by him.

Voted for the dork. :-`)

That's somewhat discouraging.

I don't care much about New Jersey, because it's a lost cause for the GOP, but it will be depressing if the Governor's Mansion in Richmond stays in Democratic hands.
