France, however, has a large semi-autonimous "pre-insurgent" region in a country following a "tolerance imperative" and unwilling to suppress an insurgency and unwilling to let the USA et all enter to help. Whether or not this is being deliberately planned, it looks like this is the way that nature is going to take its course.

Viva La France - French Military History in a Nutshell
- Gallic Wars - Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian.
- Hundred Years War - Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman."
- Italian Wars - Lost. France becomes the first and only country to ever lose two wars when fighting Italians.
- Wars of Religion - France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots
- Thirty Years War - France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.
- War of Devolution - Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux.
- The Dutch War - Tied
- War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French and Indian War - Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three ties in a row induces deluded Frogophiles the world over to label the period as the height of French military power.
- War of the Spanish Succession - Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved ever since.
- American Revolution - In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting."
- French Revolution - Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.
- The Napoleonic Wars - Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.
- The Franco-Prussian War - Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.
- World War I - Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States. Thousands of French women find out what it's like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.
- World War II - Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.
- War in Indochina - Lost. French forces plead sickness, take to bed with the Dien Bien Flu
- Algerian Rebellion - Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare; "We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.
- War on Terrorism - France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonald's.
The question for any country silly enough to count on the French should not be "Can we count on the French?", but rather "How long until France collapses?"
"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. All you do is leave behind a lot of noisy baggage."

Question: Are the French police shooting cap guns at these criminals? The only way I can see to stop the rioting is to go in with guns blazing and take out a few hundred of the thugs. That's a message they'll understand.....what wimps!

i just have one qualm. it was not the french who stopped islam in 732. it was the franks, who were really germanic. i challenge anyone on this site to name me the last important battle won by french troops with a french officer leading them. just one please. btw, napoleon was not french, he was born on the island of corsica, which at the time of his birth was italian propertyYou start out with a proposition that reads like: "name the last important battle the British won, and don't mention Alfred the Great, Haig or Montgomery 'cause they were Anglo Saxon/germanic, Scots and Norman respectively". Of course the Franks were French, as were the gentlemen who, post Joan of Arc, expelled the English from Europe; as were the Generals of the Bourbon kings who defeated the British and other European powers in the 17th and early 18th centuries; as were Napoleon's Marshals and the soldiers who did the fighting and dying; as was Ferdinand Foch, who was named the "Supreme Allied Commander" in WWI, due to the enormous contribution of the French troops who won (however bloodily) the "miracle of the Marne" and Verdun. I'm not a big "ami" of the French of today, but we don't need to indulge in historical revisionism to make Chirac's France look bad. What with the "oil for food" scandals, and the current rioting, Chirac and company are doing a good enough job of image tarnishing all by themselves.

I think Muslims begin growing beards at age 3. ;P That would explain Mohammed's penchant for 6-year old girls...

Yep, and how insensitive of us to question these poor, discriminated against, troubled youths now. Clearly, it's our fault!

While I can't recall which country it was, there was one Eastern Europe revolution in the last decade which looked awfully spontanious and unorganized; turned out it had been in planning for 16 years, and designed to look spontanious. Very effective.
Gotta wonder if something comparable is happening in France.

Oh come on, everybody knows they are disaffected unemployed and underemployed youths who feel forgotten and discarded by the French System and forced to live in remote slums, protesting the system. Dialogue and understanding are the way to handle this.

What just occurred to me is that now I can see the strategy. Why France has been spared the bombings, and the 9-11 style attacks. I thought it was because they were collaborateurs with the terrorists. Now I see it is because the brains of Al-Q (I'm guessing Bin Ladin and al-Zawahiri) have seen them as the soft underbelly of Europe and have been grooming them for this occasion. To borrow a phrase from the bolsheviks, 'it is a necessary phase.'
We Americans shouldn't get to blase, our southern border is the soft underbelly of our country, and our leadership is fiddling just like Carter did in the 70s, just like Clinton did in the 90s, and just like the Chiraq govt has been doing since they have been in office. What is happening to them is coming to us. Mark my words. Maybe sooner than we think -- this may spread to us.
