Violences urbaines: Chirac réunit un conseil de sécurité intérieure
Le Figaro ^ | [06 novembre 2005]

Jacques Chirac convened the Interior Security Council on violence in the suburbs in the Elysee Palace late Sunday afternoon. [snip]

The meeting was called yesterday when a spokesman of the Head of the State stated that Mr. Chirac would express himself on the crisis in the suburbs "at the proper time, if he considers it necessary".

The Interior Security Council meets in camera, according to whether a given situation is considered to be serious or urgent. Such a meeting had been convened following the murderous terrorist attacks July 7 in London.

In response to the protests of his silence, Jacques Chirac pleaded that it was the hour of "action".

In addition, at the beginning of afternoon Dominique de Villepin met with police, gendarmes working in the significant urban zones, and teachers working in suburbs. Villepin will make "specific proposals" during the week to try to address the crisis, a spokesman announced Sunday. [snip--the rest is a rehash]

"I don't hate the French..."

My family hails from Alsace-Lorraine, mainly the Lorraine region.

France's history is overwhelmingly the story of our civilization and it just grieves me to see France fall. Last time, under Hitler, at least the western aspects were appreciated, art, music, literature, architecture.

L'Islam brûlera la France.

> But will the French people as a whole accept Chirac's terms of appeasement?

Key up La Marseilleise, please.

They will not. Such terms simply sweep the banlieues under the rug until the next time. When the French people rejected the EU Constitution, we were told that they did so for the "wrong" reason--fear of the Anglo-Saxon model. We were not told that they could look beyond Gallism or anything about national pride or a rejection of the status quo w/r the immigrant problem. Chirac staked his reputation on that vote, and both he and it were soundly defeated. The French people are not going to let Chirac give away the store now either. At least that is what I would like to believe.

What's the matter with English?

That's what the French said when Hitler's army marched through their capitol city. Nevertheless, it really, really pained them to form the words, and it still does, apparently.

It's a sad situation, I'm not trying to belittle the French. They're just so... so... French, ya know?
