In the race for governor, the Times-Dispatch today endorses Jerry Kilgore. Contrary to the too-usual sentiment on the part of voters contemplating an election, this is not a lesser-of-two-evils decision but a positive endorsement of Kilgore.
Why? Two principal reasons.
Because Kilgore's views are in the mainstream of Virginia's voters, he holds the advantage on key issues.
For instance:
< SNIP >
Kilgore shares the values of Virginia's citizenry. He is a Republican conservative appealing to an electorate that regularly describes itself as conservative. Virginia has two Republican U.S. senators and has gone Democratic for president only once since 1952. Virginia's voters have elected a number of Democratic governors since their first Republican governor, Linwood Holton, took office in 1970. But to win, those Democrats often have had to sell themselves -- as Mark Warner did -- as moderately conservative.

This newspaper is for Jerry Kilgore. He is right on the crucial issues. He is straightforwardly in tune with the views and values of most Virginia voters. He would go to the Executive Mansion with the courage to fight for his convictions -- and Virginia hardly needs a governor who would not.
Come November 8, we urge you to give him your vote, too.

When it comes to reflecting the common sense conservative values of rural Virginians, Republican Jerry Kilgore is the clear choice for governor. Fellow GOP candidates Bill Bolling (lieutenant governor) and Bob McDonnell (attorney general) also deserve a shot in Richmond. Jerry Kilgore has practical ideas when it comes to helping localities fund school building projects - an issue Culpeper knows all too well. He supports performance-based incentives for teachers and has a solid plan to attract and retain young educators. Kilgore's "A" rating from the National Rifle Association plays well in these parts, and he has taken strong stances against gang activity, domestic violence and letting illegal immigrants enjoy some of the same rights as documented citizens.< SNIP >
In the end, all three state races come down to an ideological clash between left of center and right of center. It's clear which candidates are on either side. It's also clear which candidates embody the values that are in harmony with those of Culpeper County.
We endorse Jerry Kilgore for Governor of Virginia.

I hope Kilgore pulls it out, it's going to be close.

Another thread says this online poll at the RTD is being clobbered by the teachers' union, VEA. We need to hit back!

It's going to all be about turnout, isn't it? I'm on schedule for phone banking two more shifts before Election Day. Hope it helps!

I'm originally from Lynchburg (I live in New York City), and I sincerely hope Kilgore wins.
Thanks for your good wishes! I'm off to church now. The campaign has chosen my church as one of the two Jerry's going to be visiting today!
On to victory!
Go Jerry! You have this Catholic New Yorker's prayers and best wishes.
Turnout, Turnout, Turnout!!! You good folks in Virginia can cripple the national Democrat Party with a victory for Kilgore. This can be a "critcal path" election. Every conservative and every Republican should get to the polls and make sure everyone of like mind does exactly the same. If Kilgore wions this one and Forrester runs close in New Jersey, the Democrat Party will be seriously hurt going into the mid-term elections of 2006. Every Kilgore Virgina voter must turnout and vote. Once again, "Turnout" is the key to victory.
Good calls on Sunday's schedule. The Falls Church is one of the leading Episcopal parishes fighting the homosexual takeover of ECUSA. The McLean Bible Church is a huge suburban evangelical church with a huge missionary program. Both are very good places for Kilgore to mine votes and volunteers in Northern Virginia. Religious voters should put Kilgore over the top IF he can get them to the polls.. Come on, Virginia!!!!
I saw Kilgore, Bolling, McDonnell and George Allen in Lynchburg Friday!
Go Kilgore!
Thanks for your prayers! Another New Yorker, Rudy Guiliani has campaigned here and has recorded a great GOTV message that's running this weekend. Rudy's help should help sway some undecideds and independents!
We're working on it! We have great helpers here from the RNC. Ken Mehlman has made winning this race a priority, so all of you who've donated this year to the RNC, we in Virginia thank you. Even if you grumbled when you did it!
Jerry was very warmly received at McLean Bible this morning. It was apparent he has the conservative Christian vote sewn up. He has a great ad running on Christian radio describing the differences between him and his opponent on issues that matter to evangelicals. We need some more of the independent vote to realize that Kaine is simply too liberal for Virginia and swing our way.
The Electoral Board and General Registrar for Fairfax County, Virginia
I'm sure glad you voted!
