Our View

Culpeper Star-Exponent
Saturday, November 5, 2005

When it comes to reflecting the common sense conservative values of rural Virginians, Republican Jerry Kilgore is the clear choice for governor. Fellow GOP candidates Bill Bolling (lieutenant governor) and Bob McDonnell (attorney general) also deserve a shot in Richmond. Jerry Kilgore has practical ideas when it comes to helping localities fund school building projects - an issue Culpeper knows all too well. He supports performance-based incentives for teachers and has a solid plan to attract and retain young educators. Kilgore's "A" rating from the National Rifle Association plays well in these parts, and he has taken strong stances against gang activity, domestic violence and letting illegal immigrants enjoy some of the same rights as documented citizens.

In the end, all three state races come down to an ideological clash between left of center and right of center. It's clear which candidates are on either side. It's also clear which candidates embody the values that are in harmony with those of Culpeper County.

We endorse Jerry Kilgore for Governor of Virginia.

Campaign Wrap: A Forthright Conviction Politician: Jerry Kilgore Is the Man
ROSS MACKENZIE
Richmond Times-Dispatch
Sunday, November 6, 2005

In person, one-on-one, Jerry Kilgore is at ease. Here, as in public, he is a conviction politician. He believes.

< SNIP >

A warm-up speaker at one of the stops describes Tim Kaine as a "proud liberal." Kilgore responds, "I am the conservative running for governor, and I am proud of it." And so, in this conservative state, what Virginia's voters hear from Kilgore is what they'll get. Kilgore notes repeatedly that he is running on his record, and Kaine is running away from his. [Kaine is doing the John Kerry flip-flop routine trying to minimize his liberal record].

Kilgore's record as a local and federal prosecutor, as George Allen's secretary of public safety, and as attorney general reflects his aggressiveness on gangs, domestic violence, cross-burnings, and sex offenders. This campaign is not, and should not be, about which candidate has been more negative -- for both have been equally so as circumstances have required. Rather, it is about taxes, the death penalty, guns, and illegal immigration -- and as Kilgore is generally right on those issues, so Kaine is generally wrong.

< SNIP > [details of Kaine's liberal record here]

AT WOLFIE'S barbecue brew-pub in Charlottesville, Kilgore termed himself "a trust-the-people conservative." Senator George Allen raised the ante -- calling Kilgore "a Jeffersonian conservative who trusts free people and free enterprise." Kilgore cast the election as a choice between Virginia's conservative mainstream and the liberal extreme. He said the election boils down to a single word -- trust: Which candidate will the voters trust to say what he means and to do what he says?

Kilgore is forthright -- and forthrightly in tune with the majority of Virginians' values. He trumps Kaine on a broad array of issues central to this campaign. He hails from a region of Virginia closer to seven other state capitals than it is to Richmond -- and boasting no son as Virginia's governor since, oh about the 1930s. It's time for a governor from Virginia's Southwest. It's time for a governor running a campaign based on sincerity and conviction, as opposed to glib deception.

This is the time indeed. And Jerry Kilgore is the man.
