EASTERN European countries were yesterday scrambling to distance themselves from the CIA as officials in Washington searched for the source of an embarrassing leak that exposed a programme of secret jails for terrorist detainees.
Claims that the CIA has been hiding prominent Al-Qaeda members at a so-called black site facility in eastern Europe have prompted angry denials from Romania, Poland and Albania.
As details emerged yesterday of CIA flights to remote military airfields in northeast Poland and southeast Romania, George W Bushs administration ordered an internal inquiry into how classified data was leaked to The Washington Post and Human Rights Watch, a New York-based group.
Senior intelligence sources blamed the leak on CIA officers unhappy at having to maintain what one former counter-terrorism official described as secret gulags.
The prisons are believed to hold at least 30 Al-Qaeda leaders labelled ghost detainees by Human Rights Watch. Many no longer have any intelligence value, but the CIA has been ordered to shield them from international scrutiny or legal proceedings.
The publication of flight logs detailing CIA movements has focused attention on a former military base at Szczytno-Szymany in Poland.
Polish officials acknowledged that a Boeing 737 carrying seven Americans landed at the base in September 2003 and took five others on board. The plane continued to the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base in Romania, then to the US base in Guantanamo, Cuba.
Poland and Romania said the planes stops had nothing to do with prisoner transfers. Other sources said Albania or Macedonia might have co-operated with the CIA.
"CIA officers unhappy at having to maintain what one former counter-terrorism official described as secret gulags."
I don't give a damn if they're unhappy! Where do they propose to keep these people? Should we let the whole World know where they are? These people are top priority prisoners. Letting terrorists know where they are invites retaliation.
If CIA people are unable or unhappy about doing their jobs in a time of war, they should be gone. I'm unhappy about supporting these people with tax money. And I could care less what their apologists say.
"the French are already using it to threaten Poland and other East European countries"
The French are in no position to threaten anyone. They are waiting for Jean Francois Kerry to lead a flotilla up the Seine.
"I think it's time to thoroughly clean house in the CIA and DIA"
Exactly. If they are unable or unwilling to do their job, they shouldn't be left where they can screw things up.
My feelings zakly. SO EFFEN WHAT!!!!
I can't get any of these links to work--are you saying the story was floated before and proven false? Have you any links that work on this?
Larry Johnson comes to mind!
Who is not talkng since the Libby indictments?
Who is going to rid the CIA of traitors ?
There are lots of principals who haven't said a word, especially those in the press who have had a lot to say before. Novak still hasn't said anything. As to who would take down traitors in an agency like the CIA, I presume it would be justice.
Other than Novak, all th others have been EVERYWHERE on TV!! I can channel surf without seeing Joe Wilson or Matt Cooper!!
So he can invite them to the White House for popcorn and movies?
Fire them all. Sorry but when they start actively serving the propaganda of our foes, they are no longer "dissenting" they are commuting treason. Time for the whole CIA Establishment to be fired.
Isn't amazing how many "Conservatives" use every issues as an excuse to bash Bush. One has to wonder just which side they REALLY are on?
Remember Ted Kennedy and "Waterboarding"? - same story, same time.
If you look at the criticisms of Bush from the right, the most common theme is disappointment with his refusal to engage the political left. As Rush put it so well, "He's no Ronald Reagan."
Bush has refused to hold the rats to account for even their felonies. The left is free to run roughshod over the truth and even over the law because they know they will get away with it under the Bush administration, e.g.:Sandy Burger.
So, to answer your question, the side we are on is the political right, and we are eager for Bush to join us.
