‘Gulag’ leak from CIA men
The Sunday Times (U.K.) ^ | 11/05/05 | Tony Allen-Mills

EASTERN European countries were yesterday scrambling to distance themselves from the CIA as officials in Washington searched for the source of an embarrassing leak that exposed a programme of secret jails for terrorist detainees.

Claims that the CIA has been hiding prominent Al-Qaeda members at a so-called “black site” facility in eastern Europe have prompted angry denials from Romania, Poland and Albania.

As details emerged yesterday of CIA flights to remote military airfields in northeast Poland and southeast Romania, George W Bush’s administration ordered an internal inquiry into how classified data was leaked to The Washington Post and Human Rights Watch, a New York-based group.

Senior intelligence sources blamed the leak on CIA officers unhappy at having to maintain what one former counter-terrorism official described as “secret gulags”.

The prisons are believed to hold at least 30 Al-Qaeda leaders labelled “ghost detainees” by Human Rights Watch. Many no longer have any intelligence value, but the CIA has been ordered to shield them from international scrutiny or legal proceedings.

The publication of flight logs detailing CIA movements has focused attention on a former military base at Szczytno-Szymany in Poland.

Polish officials acknowledged that a Boeing 737 carrying seven Americans landed at the base in September 2003 and took five others on board. The plane continued to the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base in Romania, then to the US base in Guantanamo, Cuba.

Poland and Romania said the plane’s stops had nothing to do with prisoner transfers. Other sources said Albania or Macedonia might have co-operated with the CIA.

Sounds to me like our new CIA director still has some housecleaning to do...

A) the story is 17 months old. (may 2004)

B)The "ex spook" was proved a fraud.

C) The story didn't have legs then, it doesn't now.

The story may be old and outmoded, but apparently the French are already using it to threaten Poland and other East European countries to stay in line or not be admitted to all the privileges and pleasures of Euroland.

I think it's time to thoroughly clean house in the CIA and DIA of unelected wonks who think they can violate the rules and get away with impunity. Both places are like colanders.

So how come nobody is clamoring for the investigation of this leak, which can endanger our ability to fight the war on terror?

"Many no longer have any intelligence value, but the CIA has been ordered to shield them from international scrutiny or legal proceedings. "
If they do not have any more value, then the best shield would be a few feet underground. I 'd suggest disposing of them at night into a working volcano like the ones in Hawaii- no traces will be left, period.

One does wonder how much Valerie Plame knows about this?

One does wonder what Bill Clinton knows about this. But we'll never know because Bush will whitewash and cover the whole thing up. Step aside Bill Clinton and let the next enabler and chief take over.

Bill Bennett has a great article in NRO in which he discusses the "outing" of Plame who wasn't even covert and whose identity was widely known by many reporters. He compares this situation (in which it has been confirmed by Fitzgerald that NOBODY deliberately outed any covert agent) with the VERY serious leak of classified information to the world in the CIA incident. Who's going to investigate the Washington Post and track down a CIA leaker who has deliberately and with malice aforethought seriously compromised classified military information? Don't hold your breath! Why investigate a high crime when we can hype a class C misdemeanor?

This looks more and more like a sting orchestrated by law enforcement and using media stories to elicit more information. If I am right, we will see disloyal CIA and maybe media rounded up in a major bust, soon. Please note who is not talking since Libby indictments.

People who leak secret information concerning the war on terror are traitors and should be treated as such. They are no better than Aldrich Ames.
