WASHINGTON - Girding for a potential fight with the Bush administration, supporters of a ban on torturing prisoners of war by U.S. interrogators threatened Friday to include the prohibition in nearly every bill the Senate considers until it becomes law.
The no-torture wording, which proponents say is supported by majorities in both houses of Congress, was included last month in the Senate's version of a defense spending bill. The measure's final form is being negotiated with the House, and the White House is pushing for either a rewording or deletion of the torture ban.
On Friday, at the urging of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, the Senate by a voice vote added the ban to a related defense bill as a backup.
Speaking from the Senate floor, McCain said, "If necessary - and I sincerely hope it is not - I and the co-sponsors of this amendment will seek to add it to every piece of important legislation voted on in the Senate until the will of a substantial bipartisan majority in both houses of Congress prevails. Let no one doubt our determination."

"Let no one doubt our determination."
It's not your determination that's in doubt, John.
Doctor 1: Uh oh, we are going to have to take a good chunk of his temple out.
Doctor 2: This guy is a Senator. I hope he retires because this may mess his head up.
McCain (regaining consciousness): I would have had them if not....
Doctor 1 (snapping fingers): Senator McCain! Hello. Can you see me?
McCain: For the strawberries! I would have had them but for the strawberries.
Doctor 2 (screaming): Eiiiiii!!!!!!!!!
Doctor 1: Gads! He's grabbed your crotched and is playing with your privates! He' trying to roll them around in his hand!
McCain: They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with, with geometric logic, that, that a duplicate key to the Senate wardroom icebox did exist......
Doctor 1: Run!!!!!
Do you mean Hilary Bottom Clinton?
If the bill doesn't closely define what is considered torture, then I'm against it. We don't need another statute with vague phrases in it that any lawyer can play with. I'm opposed to most forms of torture, but this is ridiculous.
"Taxation and loss of personal freedom then apparently isn't a concern for Senator MCain."
Ditto. Also add that terrorism is not a concern of his.
The result of a bill like this will be to put a president or anyone in the chain of command in jeopardy if 'torture' is ever discovered. The Democrats will have a great time with this one. It will work better for them than the Plame affair.
Watch McCain go overboard on this issue. He is receiving little or no support for his presidential run. They blame it on his age but he bears grudges and can't handle his wish for some sort of cheap revenge.
"When will people really wakeup and smell the threat of terrorism?"
Well, there's a list floating around FR somewhere that shows every terrorist attack from the 70's forward.
Even 9/11 didn't shake us from our slumber and apathy.
I'm thinking it'll take an attack on our Capitol in DC, or The White House...one of which was just thwarted yesterday by British intelligence, so looks like we can just continue to ignore this problem for now. /sarcasm
'SOMETHING must explain McCain's and Kerry's despicable behavior during the hearings on Vietnam's POW/MIA Senate "Hearing"...'
Yah. Manchurian Candidates.
He's a blooming idiot!
They should be tortured at all times until they're put up against a wall and shot. The fact that we don't do that is a matter of concern.
McCain's brain is in la la land. I understand how he suffered - and why he cannot forget it. But, he must understand that torture can be a real effective tool in war and other situations. His brain has turned to mush.
Tell you what, if I thought I could save 100 people by making somebody hurt a bit in order to find out how to help, I would do it in a minute.
Have you read the law? It's language is so vague as to be interpreted by the likes of the 9th Circuit to free any prisoner in any war because merely being captured can be humiliating or degrading. It's not just a bad idea, it's bad law.
"The result of a bill like this will be to put a president or anyone in the chain of command in jeopardy if 'torture' is ever discovered. The Democrats will have a great time with this one. It will work better for them than the Plame affair."
Exactly so. And just whose side is McCain on? Why, his own, of course. And to H##L with the rest of us.
Interesting that McCain identifies with the terrorists.
McCain is a nitwit, but- a nitwit with a "conscience." Not a good combination.
