AULNAY-SOUS-BOIS, France - Rampaging youths shot at police and firefighters Thursday after burning car dealerships and public buses and hurling rocks at commuter trains, as eight days of riots over poor conditions in Paris-area housing projects spread to 20 towns.
Youths ignored an appeal for calm from President Jacques Chirac, whose government worked feverishly to fend off a political crisis amid criticism that it has ignored problems in neighborhoods heavily populated by first- and second-generation North African and Muslim immigrants.
"It's hard to just sit here and watch the rich people driving past in their swanky vehicles. They have everything and we have absolutely nothing," said Ziad, 20, the ringleader of a group of young men who took art in the riots.
"Sarkozy says we are like dogs. Well - we'll show him. Ever since he came to the government, life has been crap," said Abdul.
A Citroen Auto dealership. Citroen's have reputation for being one of the ugliest cars ever made.
(Although the Citroen SM was one of the most beautiful, IMHO).
Thanks for the pics of the burning school, Karl. Thank God no kids were in it at the time. At least, that's what I think was the case; reporting here in the U.S. on this story has been pathetic. So far no one has been killed in these riots, but it's just a matter of time if it continues to escalate.
Aren't the French overdue for the new Republic? Except how do you spell the Islamic Republic of France in Arabic?
Youths. Old Youths. Like, I don't know, 35 maybe? But definitely mere Youths.
Thank you... I'm never sure of the photo posting rules. (o:
I think the media is puzzled how this could happen in the "socialist utopia" that preaches to others about peace
there = they
Photoshop them.
It MUST be the JOOS fault, or I mean Bush....
So, how did that walk for the peace work out?
Is that a rubber ball gun???
>Paris is becoming a quagmire.
The insurgants are popular with the people and powerful.
The French should pull out of Paris.<
President Bush should demand a complete French troop withrawal by the end of the month and advise Chirac to give up the French capital and retreat to Corsica.
