PARIS, Nov 3 (AFP) - One of France's most prominent Muslim leaders Thursday urged the state to show "respect" for his community, after a seventh night of battles between angry youths and police in high-immigration suburbs of Paris.
Speaking to faithful in the Paris mosque, Dalil Boubakeur, president of the French Council for the Muslim Religion, said Muslim immigrants deserved better than their current lot.
"Our immigrant brothers in Paris and in France must be given the conditions to live with dignity as human beings," not in "disgraceful squats", Boubakeur said, referring to the low-income suburbs where the trouble has broken out.
"This is our hope, this is our wish and is an
address to the French authorities, to (president Jacques) Chirac who is a friend to Muslims, a friend to Islam," he said.
"The community deserves respect because it is respectful, young people need to find the way back to calm, our mosques need to be respected," Boubakeur said.
The firing of a police teargas canister at a packed mosque in Clichy-sous-Bois, epicentre of the violence that has affected more than a dozen Paris suburbs since last Thursday, added to the community anger at the weekend.
France is home to Europe's largest Muslim community, estimated at around five million people.
I would tell them to pack up their ditty bags, go back to their vast deserts and wander around there for 20 or thirty years IF they lived HERE but as long as they live in France, I say, go forth and multiply and "Burn, Baby, Burn"
With the definition of respect you just gave I can believe it.
Have a good evening. : )
It ain't just angry youth, and the French aren't just sitting around doing nothing. I just wish they'd pick up the pace about now.

LOL! The chutzpah of these guys. ""
Let's see if I understand this problem:
You are a refugee/immigrant from a country in turmoil and you have NO skills or/and very little or NO education.
You are living off the largess of the taxpayers of the country that has taken you in.
You are totally UNGRATEFUL for your better situation, so you are now rioting and trying to kill police and firemen who are trying to save victims and buildings harmed by your actions.
IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT WHERE YOU ARE IN FRANCE- GET THE HE** BACK TO WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM.
At the cost of this country trying to keep civilized order, it would be cheaper for them to fly you ALL ONE WAY to wherever you came from and you can go back to living in tents with camels or whatever. JMO.
"Our immigrant brothers in Paris and in France must be given the conditions to live with dignity as human beings,"
Shouldn't that say?
"Our immigrant brothers in Paris and in France must EARN the conditions to live with dignity as human beings," That's how it works for the rest of us.
You bet!
That's okay, I understand. I have been in your position before. You don't have to answer this post...I disagree with you, but you have gamely tried to present the opposing view. Thank you for trying, that is often what brings out the most interesting threads. Often, when in your shoes, you begin to feel like you are talking to brick walls (I suspect that may be the feeling you now harbor...)
To me, it boils down to what respect is. American soldiers in the Pacific in WWII respected their Japanese foes, even as they may have hated them to the core. More than one of our POW's from Vietnam has remarked that "Those Vietnamese interrogators really knew how to tie the ropes on us better than any sailor..." In nearly evident respect of their capacity for sadism.
If a man has a gun on you, or hits you with a baseball bat, you respect the gun or the bat, but not the man.
In the military, you must respect the rank of an Admiral even though you find a man wearing the uniform detestable.
If you value your skill as an athelete, you can get your clock cleaned by an obnoxious opponent (which has happened to me) and you might say to yourself "By God, that guy was a complete dickhead, but he sure could fire a slapshot..." You respect the slapshot and athletic ability, but you do not respect the person.
In this context (the rioting muslims) they are talking about respecting the person. That is the kind of Respect can only be given, not taken by force.
Elmer Fudd said:
I want WESPECT!
But, how can you say these things when Dalil Boubakeur, president of the French Council for the Muslim Religion says, "The community deserves respect because it is respectful,..."?
These youth are respectful; we have his word for it.
What we have here is another cultural misunderstanding, along the lines of what "peace" means to a Westerner, and what it means to a Koranimal.
These young men are respectful, and want the same brand of respect and should be accommodated.
Molotov cocktail them; pelt them with rocks; shoot them...
It is the respect they are demanding, and it is the respect they should be given: the respect accorded a fighting enemy, while dancing on his dead body.
So true.
There are some who would prefer to keep a few Infidels around as slaves.
This is what I have to say to the sons of Satan, errrr, I mean the "immigrant brother in Paris and in France." Do you think they'll understand what I'm saying? LOL!
F#$k Islam and f#$k Muslims. They are trash who deserve no respect. When they stop murdering, then we can talk.
"Do you think the reason they are "excluded" from employment (other than the fwench job security apparatus) might have something to do with a month off for Ramadan, prayers interrupting work five times a day, and most people not having the stomach to endure employment with the lazy and intolerant prigs?"
No, I don't think that's the reason, because it's not true.
"You're not seriously comparing American blacks and their experience to French Muslim immigrants?"
I am comparing the American experience with the black insurrections of the 1960s and 1970s and what is happening in France today with French citizens born of immigrant parents. (If one is born in France, he is not a "Muslim immigrant".)
Nope, the Frenchies will fight for their culture (if not for anything else).
