"They are stupid. They are destroying everything," said an 18-year-old who gave her name only as Mariam. "They should do that in southwest Paris or at the National Assembly - not here. People here are suffering already."

This alone should totally disqualify them. Disgusting creatures.

"Our culture knows how to turn immigrants into Americans"

Not Latinos. Hablo on your last 411 call? Look at a ballot in Florida?

And so reap what they sow.

Failure to understand the basis of their culture, while expecting to find common ground in language and secular "art", and have that take the place of religion is surely part of their downfall.

Now is the time for a leader to arise, but one must wonder if there is anyone left who can even define the word. Nothing will happen until the French people wake up and call for a end to this.

One additional factor is that it is far more difficult to assimilate into France. The standards are much higher. Even a slight foreign accent marks one an outsider. There are pluses and minuses to this. A country with higher assimilation standards tends to have a lower illegal immigration rate than one that does not. It also tends to have a generally more homogenous mainstream culture. We joke about France's left leaning polity, point well taken. However countries like France do have a more identifiable core culture than countries like the US. There is a richer, deeper culture to assimilate into. Etc.

I'd say the French culture you describe is thinner and more brittle, not richer and deeper than American culture.

One cannot help but notice that in all the reports on these riots, there are no Frenchmen standing with rifles to protect their property. France has successfully disarmed its citizens, leaving them defenseless.

It is not the ethnic Frenchmen whose property is being destroyed. Guarantee if the Muslims took their riots to the white part of town they would be met and outnumbered by angry French armed with rifles, shotguns, clubs, pitchforks, etc. The destruction wouldn't happen.

It is the same thing here. Inner city riots always take place in inner city neighborhoods. Rioter know too well that if they took their violence to the whiter parts of town they'd be met by armed mobs of "good ol' boys" looking for a reason to shoot.

That's all but true here in the US as well. Try getting married without going down to City Hall / the County Seat. Just try it ... the actual, official marriage happens when you submit your completed paperwork, and it is approved by da gov. Prior to that, you are single in the eyes of da gov.

Have you had any assimilation (or attempted assimilation experiences) in the Old World, either Europe or Asia? It's hard to put into words. People in the Old World do not welcome outsiders as readily as we do. We are more transient people, in general. We do not live in the same town for 30 generations. Etc.

You are likely correct in your prediction.

I hope so. I'd like to think that even the ethnic French would crack some skulls if the rioting moved into their parts of town.

Should have been phrased in the past tense. Even now, however, we do a better job than virtually any other country.

I suppose we're splitting hairs. I would classify a "closed" culture as narrow and provincial. While the history may run deep, I wouldn't call the culture itself deep if its manifestation in practice is a brittle inflexibility toward all outsiders.

If you have your wedding in a church in the US and it is officiated over by a private clergyman and the witnesses are private citizens it is legally valid as long as the clergyman and witnesses file a notarized affidavit.

In France, a marriage is never legally valid unless it is officiated by a authorized government employee and witnessed by a government clerk.

All French Christians have to have two wedding ceremonies - one at city hall and one at church.

just an observation based on what some interviewed in the article opined,, seems like wherever Muslims migrate, trouble follows for those who have opened their arms and borders to help them escape the countries and oppression and poverty they left behind... and ironically, it is those whose country is now affected who are then made out to be the bad guys.

That religion of peace thing sure looks like a One Way street to me. Maybe if they practiced some birth control for a change, their plight might diminish , but I doubt it.
