Paris riots spread throughout north-east Posted at 8:20pm on 3 Nov 2005
Violence broke out in impoverished Paris suburbs for the seventh straight night, with rioters clashing with police and leaving a trail of torched cars and vandalised buildings.
Observers are pointing to France's failure to address deep problems of poverty and immigration, including tensions with its Muslim minority.
In Aulnay-sous-Bois in the worst-affected area of Seine-Saint-Denis, a police station was briefly besieged by gangs of youths while a gymnasium and a garage were set ablaze and a commercial centre vandalised.
A total of 40 vehicles, including two buses, were torched before midnight in nine towns in the Seine-Saint-Denis area, a high-unemployment largely-immigrant region. Police made 15 arrests.
Two primary schools were also damaged in the area northeast of the French capital.
The riots started last Thursday following the accidental electrocution of two youths, aged 15 and 17, who had scaled an electrical relay station's walls to escape a police identity check in Clichy-sous-Bois.
The firing of a police tear gas grenade against a mosque in Clichy-sous-Bois during clashes on Sunday also sparked rage in the suburb's large Muslim community.
ROFL!
I agree with you there - the problem isn't that teh French police have been passive: they haven't. They have been inept.
Chirac's comments as you say show just how clueless he really is.
Apples and Oranges
you reap what you sow
I STRONGLY Urge France to use the entire left wing playbook. gentle police, dialog, peace rallies, then end up putting all immigrants on welfare for life.
It wouldn't have to be that hard. But they would have to be willing to become politically uncorrect and actually profile muslims. Instead of waiting to be attacked and attack back.
Here's an interesting link to an English/French blog on the riots . . .

Muslim playbook:
uneducated? riot
unemployed? riot
mentioned in the press? threaten lives
angry? set off a bomb
really really angry? set off a suicide blast
Embrace your Muslim future mon ami...Cook in the stew of your making.
Yeah, that's the Muslim playbook alright.
But I'm really confused about what they expect to accomplish. If it's civil war, they will need to supply guns and lots of them while the rioting is still growing.
And I would expect Europe to step in before France surrenders.
Somehow I got a Jimmy Carter flashback when reading that.

Rioting in French suburbs 'well organized'
Thu Nov 03 2005 14:56:34 ET
French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said Thursday that the riots in several Paris suburbs over the previous night were "not spontaneous" but rather "well organized."
"What we saw in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis overnight was not spontaneous, it was perfectly organized. We are looking into by whom and how," Sarkozy told French news channel i-tele.
The interior minister also said the government would not allow "troublemakers, a bunch of hoodlums, think they can do whatever they want" in the country.
A force of 1,000 police were assigned late Thursday to Seine-Saint-Denis, following the previous night of violence which affected about half of the 40 towns in the department, mostly communities of immigrants from Africa, officials said.
Leftists vs Islam!
pass le popcorne.
Almost as useful as the only phrase I remember from high school French - "la plume de la tante" - the pen of my aunt.
Now THERE'S a phrase that has come in handy over the years!
Je m'appelle Suzanne. (I'm still not sure about the spelling.)
My name is Suzanne.
It's all I remember from high school french. Well, that and Madame Bouvier spitting every time she talked.
yeh but its Paris, prob. most frenchmen could give a frog's *ss about paris...lol
and for ignoring the Muslim violence agaist their own Jewish community which escalated to historic levels after the start of the Intifada in 2000.
That's it!!! Send Kerry, he's probably dying to do something relevant. Send Kerry and he can 'nuance' the problem for them.
