The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

FBI bungles Florida terrorism case says Justice Department

Snip: Tuesday, December 6, 2005; FBI agents botched a terrorism investigation in Florida and tried to cover up mistakes, said Justice Department investigators, who also concluded that a high-ranking official retaliated against the longtime undercover agent who pointed out the problems.

The findings were included in a draft report by the Justice Department's inspector general on a complaint made by former agent Michael German about an investigation in Orlando that he believed showed promising signs of a link between terrorism financing and the sale of illegal drugs.

Medical cost of illegal immigration: crisis for US hospitals

Snip: The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (emtala.com) requires all emergency departments to treat any person seeking help for a medical condition, which can range from a gunshot wound, to a traffic accident injury, to labor, to a splinter in a finger, to a cough. The emergency department must screen and treat the patient until ready for discharge, or stabilize the patient for transfer, regardless of ability to pay.

Uncompensated costs to hospitals and other healthcare providers run into the billions of dollars annually. States bordering Mexico take the biggest hits. The Federation for American Immigration Reform, or FAIR (fairus.org), estimates that last year, California lost $1.4 billion, Texas lost $850 million, and Arizona lost $400 million. Officials believe care to illegal immigrants make up 25 percent of those costs. If that is true, then hospitals serving the 24 US counties along the border ate $190 million in the year 2000, according to an oft-cited study by MGT of America (mgtamer.com) sponsored by the United States/Mexico Border Counties Coalition (bordercounties.org)

Group sees some gains in bioterrorism response, but gaps remain

Dozens of members of the Southern California Muslim community turned out to show support for Abdel-Jabbar Hamdan, 44, a founder of a mosque in Anaheim who has lived in the area for some 20 years but never became a citizen. Accusations of terror links still follow Toledo Muslim charity

Snip: KindHearts of Toledo, Ohio, and the 24 other organizations identified by the Senate Finance Committee in 2003 remain under scrutiny by the Justice Department, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Tuesday.The Justice Department declined to comment Tuesday to The Associated Press.

Since its founding in 2002, KindHearts had been getting $4 million in donations a year, mostly from U.S. Muslims looking for ways to fulfill their Quranic obligation to perform "zakat" and "sadaqa," two forms of charity. The Justice Department has rejected requests for a list of approved charity groups so Muslims can give to the poor without being suspected of terrorist ties.

To all of these exhortations came cries of ‘Alllahu Akhbar’ from the enormous, simmering crowd of what looked to me like the angriest gathering of young men and women with whom I have ever had the misfortune to be seated in my lifetime.

Student arrested at Monroe High School in Rochester

Snip: 12/6/2005 6:00 PM A Rochester teen is under arrest after a scuffle with a police officer assigned to Monroe High School. According to police and school officials, the school resource officer tried to search 16-year-old Jihad Perry after receiving reports that a student was bringing a gun to school. Police say Perry tried to run and even threw punches at the officer, who then used pepper spray to subdue him.

The officer then discovered what appeared to be a gun in Perry's waistband. It turned out to be an air gun that's a replica of a 45-caliber handgun. The gun was confiscated.

Hezbollah boosting ties to Al Qaeda claim

Snip: WASHINGTON, DC, United States - Lebanon and Israel may be facing the prospect of massively increased terror attack threats. New reports claim that al-Qaida has set up an organizing center in Lebanon and that Iran has boosted its ties to West Bank Palestinian militants, especially Islamic Jihad, who have launched a new suicide bomber campaign against Israel.

The Lebanese Shiite weekly Shiraa, which opposes the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, or Party of God, is claiming this week that al-Qaida has already set up an operational command base in the country. It also claims that Imad Mughniyeh, the prominent Hezbollah leader, is representing al-Qaida in talks with potential sympathetic Palestinian leaders in the south of the country.

Curious stares at wife provoked Osama to jihad

Snip: The friend Khaled Batarfi, a Saudi journalist, who lived down the street from bin Laden in the 1970's, told the magazine that one aspect of his trip that made a strong impression on bin Laden was the curious stares by airline passengers at his wife, an observant Muslim, who was dressed in a draping gown and full head covering - attire unfamiliar to many Americans at the time. Some passengers even went so far as to snap pictures Batarfi told the New Yorker, adding that when bin Laden returned to Jedda, Saudi Arabia, he told people that the experience was like "being in a show."

My ornry little gray girl refuses to listen and jumps on my back and up to my shoulders almost daily. She snuggles as close as she can to my face, purring like a baby.
