Baptists and Water Distribution
11/1/2005 | KeithHinson

Posted on 11/01/2005 5:35:12 PM PST by KeithHinson

I originally posted this as a reply but am new to this web site. Here it is as a new thread:
Volunteers working with the Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief Unit honored the request of the host pastor to set aside canned water with an Anheuser-Busch logo. At no time was anyone deprived of water. In fact, there was a huge surplus of bottled and canned water available at the Clewiston relief site. There was never any disruption in the supply of water being given out to members of the public who continued to receive food, water and other types of assistance from Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief workers.
It is an absolute falsehood to suggest -- as many irresponsible bloggers have -- that the Baptist volunteers withheld the basic needs of life from Floridians impacted by the hurricane. Contrary to misinterpretations of news reports, no one was denied access to water.
One may disagree with the strong stand that many Southern Baptists take against the consumption of alcohol. One may even regard such opposition to alcohol as offensive.
But it's impossible to say truthfully that this conviction caused any inconvenience or shortage for victims of Hurricane Wilma. The facts are exactly the opposite.
The fact is that virtually all of the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers serve selflessly -- taking time away from employment and family to minister in the name of Jesus Christ. Churches such as First Baptist Church, Clewiston, graciously serve as host sites -- providing a place where food, water and other necessities of life may be obtained by anyone in need -- without regard to religion or any other demographic consideration.

I would suggest that Mr. Hinson get his keyboard back here and start responding to some folks.

I would suggest that Mr. Hinson go take a sabbatical.

Apparently our dear Mr. Keith doesn't understand that this was a relief effort, not a time to recruit new converts ...

But I'm RC not SBC, so it's not forbidden, it's mandatory (or at least it was when I was growing up)

Martin Luther too

Easy to say something grand like this. Hard to actually do that.

That's what it's all about, and that is why it is not easy to be a true 'Christian'.

They IMPOSED their religious convictions on others.

How so? They refused to give out water that was in CANS with the BUSCH logo on them. To do so would be (in their view) promoting BUSCH and BEER.

Would you promote FR to others if it had PORN on the LEAD SCREEN?

Cans of Water with Busch logo promote Busch WATER, not Busch Beer.

Take this. An emergency volunteer denies you treatment because it is against their religious convictions to extend the life of an idiot.

It seems from your response using personal attacks (a no no on FR, by the way),that you are reacting harshly due to the fact you know what your answer to the question is and you are embarrassed about it.

Don't worry, I won't be judging you. You can take your answer with you when you meet your maker. He will do the judging.

But I bet the Salvation Army or the Red Cross would have been glad to take the evil water off their hands.

You lost the bet, because this information was known publicly and neither the S.A. nor R.C. took that water.

Most likely due to logistics and the fact that they had plenty of water to give out, but they did not make any move to take it.

Could you show me where you can buy BUSCH WATER?

I don't believe they normally can and sell water.

If you stop a person on the street and say "BUSCH....", and ask them to fill in the next word, do you think it will be "WATER"?????

Where does it say Southern Baptist were trying to convert anyone?? Perhaps you are referring to this...

to minister in the name of Jesus Christ.

To minister is to serve and that is what they did.

Perhaps you can help me understand the bigotry going on here. A couple of examples...

IF pro lifers ever had an organization to help others in a natural disaster, would you be offended if they 'set aside' bottles from Planned Parenthood?

IF the NRA was to set up relief help (HA), would you approve of them handing out coffee in cups that say "Guns Kill"??

You can mock my Lord all you want, but the battle is done.

Since NO ONE was denied water, I'd say my Bible defended my response.

It is more dangerous for those who are against Christianity to force Christians to act against their conscience in the way they represent the God who died on the Cross for the world.

"And please show me where in the bible water from a brewery is evil."

It doesn't have to be evil, it just has to appear evil.

1Th 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Did the SBC formally relinquish it?
