" I really want to go to DU and poke at them. 8) I've wanted this for so long, and they're all so angry about Alito. "

It's not just DU.
Tony Show reported that John Roberts of CBS described Judge Alito as " sloppy seconds."

The "uber" right (as you called them), usually don't get what they want. This time, they did.

Maybe now they'll feel less alienated. Maybe now, they won't act so uber-ish.

Cut them some slack.

I look forward to you guys handing Nelson his hat next time he's up for re-election. That would be a great Senate Republican seat. 8) The dems can't be encouraged with that stat of there being 11 democrats in very red States that Bush won. And there are only three Republicans in very blue States, if I remember correctly, and they're RINOs so it wouldn't be a major loss. If they get those three, and we get those 11 or even just half of them, that's a HUGE win for us. 8)

Naturally as a Catholic you would approve of 5+ Catholics on SCOTUS. There has not been one Evangelical nominated since 1930.

First full disclosure, I'm Catholic.

Second, my first choice would have been Edith Jones, not a Catholic.

Both are good conservatives. I suspect Edith was waylaid by the gang of 14 and Arlen Spector because of her outspoken views on Roe and the role of religion in the founding of this country. But Alito is a fine pick. Let's judge the nominees on the content of their character and their judicial philosophy, not on the church they attend.

Firstly, I support Alito, and think he is a highly qualified judge. Indeed, he likely was the best choice. I am more pro-believer, and think that is the mold for those who should be on the bench. Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts are all strong believers, and it shows. Kennedy and Souter might have stopped in a church to relieve themselves at some point, and consider that makes them Catholics. Obviously, their rulings are more along the lines of pagans.

Secondly, I am not anti-Catholic, but I do see a strong bias against Evangelicals from some quarters.

The Founding Fathers considered their belief system of paramount importance in choosing leaders, and that is the point John Jay was making. We have departed from that system, and today you see the results. It can be strongly argued Jay was head and shoulders above any other justice who has ever sat on the bench, and so his opinion does count for something.

This whole liberal lie/spin about the yellowcake gift from Foley/Plame/Wilson will fall apart if Libby goes to trial.

Libby's lawyers can get what the lying mediots said during the grand jury phase and then expose them as liars with liberal axes to grind perjurers in the upcoming trial.

Fitz can't allow that to happen. Libby will probably get off with a terrible sentence of serving lunch for an hour at a local food for the perpetual poor lunch with zero admission of guilt.

The left can't win elections. They can't win via their

This is a choice I can get behind and support. Alito has a definate track record and is a known quantity.

I still would have preferred Janice Rogers Brown. Brown could have been another role mode for blacks and women alike. While Alito does posess the proper mindset, I do think it's important for people to be able to see conservative blacks and women in prominant positions. It allows them the 'choice' of following someone's role model, other than what is generally exhibited by the NOW and Race pimps.

Thanks! Those qualified women were held up in the Senate confirmation battle by the Dems for over three years -- Owens and Brown. They were too new to the federal bench but wouldn't surprise me to see Owens or Brown as the next pick.

Ooops some of this got left off in the posting.

"The left can't win elections. They can't win via their battered and losing MSM. Now it appears that even with liberals running a phoney grand jury, they can't win."

I would bet if Brown had been confirmed several years ago, she would be the pick for the bench. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see her replace the next person who resigns.

Ooooo bad form. Roberts slipped up. You can always tell when you have libs on the ropes and they're scared when a lib "journalits" like john roberts gives in to his true liberal nature, and loses his supposed neutral journalistic facade, and makes a below the belt comment like that. Liberals are scared, they are going to lose this and lose the SC with this nomination and they know it. THIS will be VERY FUN in the coming weeks. I LIKE THIS VERY MUCHLY!!! 8)

It has crossed my mind several times that the Miers nomination might have been a "head fake." People will object that Bush would never do such a thing to a friend. That's true; he wouldn't...but...what if Miers was in on the plan?

I've been thinking exactly the same thing ... W could've definitely been "gaming" with this, and Miers is a close enough an associate that she would've played her scripted part to bring out all the rattlesnakes and skunks to show their stripes ... ya never know with W .. chess, not checkers = strategery.

There is tension in the DEM camp, and in the bowels of the gang of 14. Buy stock in Maalox!

Has Lindsey Graham commented yet? IMO, he would be wise to support this nomination. He's not 'out of the woods yet' over his inclusion with the "Gang of Fourteen".

You have a very overblown sense of how strong the "conservative movement" is in the Senate.

Don't even try to tell me they can be voted out of office by conservatives, either. I've been working for decades toward more conservative Senate. It is virtually impossible to defeat any incumbent, and there are many RINOs who would be replaced by a solid Demodog long before being replaced by anyone resembling a conservative Republican (Snowe, Collins, Chaffee, Specter, to name a few) and those new Demodogs would be there for thirty solid years in place of the RINO.

One example: a few days ago, on a different thread, speaking to a GunOwner unhappy about 2nd Amendment legislation, I went through an analysis of the Senators' voting records based on the "GunOwners of America" ratings. I've done similar compilations of the Senate based on RightToLife, ACU, and a couple other "scorecards" and there are quite similar results to the following:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1509375/posts?page=205#205

A summary is this CONSOLIDATION:
SENATE
#As
#Bs
#Cs
#Ds
#Fs
#?s
CumAvg.
DEMODOGS
0
0
0
4
131
11
0.03
REPUBLICANS
9
37
62
27
17
2
1.96

The Demodogs earn a SOLID F, the Republicans earn a solid C.

The way I look at such results, is that there are about 16 reliable conservative votes in the Senate, and about 24 others who can be persuaded to vote for conservative legislation. The other SIXTY votes in the Senate either will NEVER vote for conservative principles, or will demand that major concessions be made in order to gain their vote.

Anyone who realizes this does not wonder why we've got problems passing immigration law, tax reform, Social Security reform, balanced budget, etc. That difficulty is proof that conservatives have very little strength in the Senate, for anyone with capability to examine the situation mpartially. There is NOT a "conservative" Senate in the United States by any measure I am aware of, or according to the scorecards of any organization.

When you have to depend on a Senate that earns only this type of meager rating and make noises about "conservative strength", you're simply fooling yourself. The electorate may be more conservative than this, and I truly believe it is, but it is still a decade away from being able to overcome the huge Senate "moderate Republican" deficit.

I don't know which state you hail from, but here in the NorthEast, it is virtually impossible to elect a moderately conservative Republican to any office. That is true in a huge portion of the Country. In addition, the power of the incumbancy has deterred even that part of the country that has become more conservative over the last 40 years from electing Senators who reflect that conservatism.

Conservatism has some regional strength, and some pockets of growing power, but as the scorecard table above shows, there is a long way to go before that strength can be reliably exercised in legislation or strongly conservative judicial appointments. We can continue to do better, but we have to be patient in working to slowly cycle more conservative Senators into the mix as we are able.

Doesn't this just break your heart? Alito was not on the list of Judges that Reid suggested to the President. I like Alito even better.

Conservative Base Should Rally Around Alito

By Bobby Eberle, GOPUSA

Reaction is already coming out on the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court. Although President George W. Bush's comments of a justice in the mold of Scalia or Thomas were not stated as emphatically as a "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge, conservatives took it as such and thus were justifiably dismayed at the president's first pick to replace O'Connor. Now, the president has given America a nominee with a proven judicial record -- one that steers clear of judicial activism.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has called Alito a "man of outstanding character, who is deeply committed to public service, and has a distinguished history of professional achievement and leadership." Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said that an Alito nomination would create problems for the Democrats and noted on CNN's Late Edition that Alito was "not one of the names that I've suggested to the president."

It appears that the battle lines are being drawn, and it's now time for the entire Republican Party to come together around a solid nominee of stellar credentials and a proven judicial track record.

Of course the media is trying to upset women and middle America. It's what they do best. As for Harriet Miers, I was concerned with some of her earlier statements. I think Alito is a better choice.

I supported Miers for the same reasons - thinking that a "stealth" candidate would be the only kind of conservative that could be confirmed by this Senate, which is dominated by a coalition of Democrats and RINOs.

I sincerely hope that I was wrong and that a solid conservative like Judge Alito can make it to the high court.
