Naturally as a Catholic you would approve of 5+ Catholics on SCOTUS. There has not been one Evangelical nominated since 1930.

First full disclosure, I'm Catholic.

Second, my first choice would have been Edith Jones, not a Catholic.

Both are good conservatives. I suspect Edith was waylaid by the gang of 14 and Arlen Spector because of her outspoken views on Roe and the role of religion in the founding of this country. But Alito is a fine pick. Let's judge the nominees on the content of their character and their judicial philosophy, not on the church they attend.

Firstly, I support Alito, and think he is a highly qualified judge. Indeed, he likely was the best choice. I am more pro-believer, and think that is the mold for those who should be on the bench. Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts are all strong believers, and it shows. Kennedy and Souter might have stopped in a church to relieve themselves at some point, and consider that makes them Catholics. Obviously, their rulings are more along the lines of pagans.

Secondly, I am not anti-Catholic, but I do see a strong bias against Evangelicals from some quarters.

The Founding Fathers considered their belief system of paramount importance in choosing leaders, and that is the point John Jay was making. We have departed from that system, and today you see the results. It can be strongly argued Jay was head and shoulders above any other justice who has ever sat on the bench, and so his opinion does count for something.

John Jay's opinion should count for more than something, it should be of paramount importance when considering anything to do with the SC. He is one of the most underappreciated great founding persons in the history of the United States, and ALL SC nominees should be just like John Jay or as close as possible. A SC loaded with like minded people to John Jay would give us a SC that the founding fathers intended us to always have, and would 100% guarnatee that ALL of the stupid rulings given us by ginsbueg, stevens, breyer, souter, and most by o'conner would never have happened.

I'm not seeing it. It was coincidental that a bad pick like Miers was an Evangelical. Like jwalsh07, I am Catholic, and am happy with the Alito pick. But I'm not happy because he's Catholic; I'm happy because he's a "strict constructionist in the style of a Thomas or a Scalia."

I was rooting for JRB, who is not a Catholic. She belongs to "Church of Christ" or something like that. Dunno if that falls under Evangelical.
