Link: Religious beliefs trump hurricane relief.
Hurricane victims who wanted water had some difficulty finding it at a relief station in Clewiston Friday. The volunteer group running a supply center doesn't like the company that donated the water, so they decided not to give it to those in line for help.
Twenty-two pallets of the canned water, distributed free by beer company Anheuser-Busch, bears the company's label and members of the Southern Baptist Convention refused to hand it out to those in need.

"But that's just the point, isn't it? The SBC was not going to be using the water. They running a supply center, and were supposed to pass it to others for whom it had a use."
And they elected not to use it. Busch can give it to another agency if they like. Was anyone going thirsty? The almighty reporter didn't say so, so I shall assume that the answer is no, otherwise, I'll see the report of all the dead at 11:00. Should the SBC hand out condoms just because someone offers them?
"Let me guess. You're also in favor of pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions they don't agree with."
That wasn't my question, to refresh your memory, it was "Should the SBC hand out condoms just because someone offers them?"
"I would agree with you completely if the SBC was asked to hand out condoms. Or beer. They were asked to distribute WATER. Do you see where your analogy fails?"
No, I don't see where it fails. Does advertising send a message? Do you believe that Joe Camel should have been removed from Camel cigarette packs because kids were influenced by the advertising? The SBC is FREE to select what it deems as appropriate for distribution, they believe that water in beer cans sends a message just like giving kids condoms sends a message. If there truly were people going thirsty, I doubt very seriously that they would withold the water. People are NOT dying of thirst.
OK.
Two rebel Baptists were handing out water.
Even though the pastor and the rest of the church were not.
Two people out of an entire church is not something to be proud of.
"No one asked the SBC to distribute anything unwholesome. "
Wow, you called condoms "unwholesome"! But still, I don't see where the analogy fails. Pardon the caps but THEY DON'T HAVE TO DISTRIBUTE ANYTHING THEY DON'T WANT TO. Did you know that the Red Cross will not accept clothing? I didn't either until I volunteered at a relief site for Katrina. Let's go write some articles about that.
AP:
RED CROSS REFUSES CLOTHING FOR KATRINA SURVIVORS
Dateline: Houston
Thousands of people were turned away by the Red Cross today, they brought clothing for waterlogged New Orleaneans but the Red Cross turned it all down. They only want cash and canned goods."
OK, the story is mine but I lived through it.
Here's a link: http://www.redcross.org/news/in/tsunamis/faq.html#where
It doesn't specifically mention Katrina but the result is the same, no clothing donations.
"all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under live robber barons than under omnipotent moral busibodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good, will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ~ C.S. Lewis "
He might have been writing of Marxists....or Democrats as well...remember what Hitlery said "We're going to take some things back from you for the common good"
Baptists aren't known for killing 400 million folks and enslaving nearly 2 billion souls over the years...socialists of all stripes are,,,,whether Marxist socialist or National Socialist!
My quote: "No, I don't see where it fails."
Your quote: "Of course you do. You equated condoms with water. No one asked the SBC to distribute anything unwholesome. That's the difference." If you can't be intellectually honest about this, at least be amusing."
Please show me where I equated condoms with water. Does advertising send a message, yes or no? Is the SBC allowed to determine what message they send, yes or no?
"If you can't be intellectually honest about this, at least be amusing." You can always tell when someone is losing a discussion, they start throwing insults instead of opinion or fact.
Know the difference between a catholic and a baptist? .....The catholic will speak to you in a liquor store...;)
Read my previous posts in this thread. If you still don't "get it", you are either deliberately trying not to get it, or are obtuse.
And by the way - an obtuse person doesn't know he's obtuse -if he did, he wouldn't be obtuse. Make sense?
The politically correct religious left and the religious right are flip sides of the same legalistic coin. Their superior, self-righteous attitude of presuming to know what's best for everyone was described by C.S. Lewis perfectly. The Framers put the Constitution in the way of such mentalites. Thank GOD!
BTW - you didn't get the point in #37, or #42, or #53. Unless you're hoplessly obtuse or in denial, you should read them over and over again until you do.
LOL!!! bttt
Did anyone accuse you of it? Moral busibodies aren't confined to any particular church. One finds them in secular society, too. (click my screen name for more)
I may have scratched off the beer advertising, because that is what it is, advertising. which is O.K.
I agree with your first quoted sentence above. It's too bad this resulted in bad press for the SBC, who have been doing so much good.
That said, it would be rude and inappropriate to consider intentionally removing the name of the donor from the water. First of all, you can't. These were cans... I'm guessing pre-printed beer cans that were filled with plain water instead of beer on the production line. It's not like a label that can be pulled off. But, even if it could, to do that would insult the donor who deserves the PR and the recognition for their gift. It'd be as wrong as if you were asked to remove the word "Baptist" from all of your shirts, hats, trucks and meals and other offerings because it is "just advertising", right?
