What doomed Miers? (Robert Novak: Hint - Judge Karen Williams Front Runner (my title))
Townhall.com ^ | October 29, 2005 | Robert Novak

Comment: Drudge has posted the latest article by Bob Novak that gives strong hints that Judge Williams is the front runner (see 3rd paragraph):

______________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON -- Managers of the failed Harriet Miers nomination for the Supreme Court set the actual day of her demise as Oct. 18, when conservative Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Sam Brownback of Kansas called for the release of her work product as White House counsel to justify her confirmation.

Miers's strategists at that point felt the game was over because of inability to fight congressional demands for documents that the White House would not release. This was compounded when her visits to Republican senators went so badly that further sessions had to be suspended.

A footnote: Support among senators for Bush's nomination in place of Miers is concentrated on two conservative women: Federal Circuit Judge Karen Williams of Orangeburg, S.C., and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan.

What I want to bring everybody's attention to is this Novak column from Sep 11th, 2005 going over the short list of candidates before the Miers announcement.

The Next Madame Justice

Excerpt:

Appellate Judge Edith Clement (5th Circuit, New Orleans) was the runner-up to Roberts in the first selection process, but the word in legal circles is that she did not do well in her interview with the president and now is out of the picture. Appellate Judge Edith Jones (5th Circuit, Houston) has been mentioned for the Supreme Court for a decade and at 56 is near the outer age limit. New names are Appellate Judge Karen Williams (4th Circuit, Orangeburg, S.C.), one of the most conservative federal judges, and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan.

Again, the two names mentioned in order are Judge Karen Williams and then Justice Maura Corrigan.

Novak has excellent sources. I believe Judge Williams has the nomination should she accept it. President Bush in at Camp David this weekend working the phones.

It will be one helluva fight if either of these qualified and conservative women are chosen. The Liberals and the MSM will go ballistic.

Nobody guessed right in either of the last two nominations. If a name is being leaked, it's deliberate misdirection, just like the leaks we heard about the last two.

I sure hope Novak's sources have all dried up, not to mention the sources in the WH for any of the lefty reporters, after yesterday. Surely, they will learn by now it doesn't pay to talk to any of them.

"Appellate Judge Edith Jones (5th Circuit, Houston) has been mentioned for the Supreme Court for a decade and at 56 is near the outer age limit."

She would still be 4 years younger than Meiers.

(P.S. How do you make quotes from another post appear in italics?)

OT:
I don't know how many of you read Bill Roggio at The Fourth Rail (if you don't and are interested in what is happening in Iraq you really should his blog is at:

http://billroggio.com/

Anyway, he is planning on going to Iraq and blogging from there and needs some assistance. See:
http://billroggio.com/archives/2005/10/a_journey_to_an.php

We need more bloggers like Bill out there since the MSM is of little help.

Good question, and I hope we get some info posted here.

Notice this line from Novak back in September:

New names are Appellate Judge Karen Williams (4th Circuit, Orangeburg, S.C.), one of the most conservative federal judges, and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan.

Williams has reputation for "fire brand" Conservatism among her enemies--whatever "fire brand" means, but it can't be good news to Liberals.

Novak is saying that those two women are front runners with some unnamed senators, not with Bush. You might want to consider asking the mods to change your headline. Just a suggestion.

Nah. I think it will be enough to see how she does in the swim suit competition.
