The problem, of course, is that Libby and other Administration officials were more concerned about blunting Wilson's op-ed than they were about the law.

It was my understanding that they really weren't concerned about Wilson's op-ed but were more concerned about the misinformation circulating about "who" was responsible for sending him on his junket.

...Russert claims, though, that this part of the conversation never happened, and this is part of the perjury indictment against Libby...

Does the WH record all calls? Even to the VPs office? And his people? Should be interesting Mr. Russert.

"Now is a good time for Cheney to resign due to his health and loss of counsel. That way, the next President of the United States can be put into position."

Why does Cheney need to resign? The results of his physical over the summer was fine. He is a very valuable member of the administration, Bush relies heavily on him, and he is the man I want to take over if the worst happens. Plus, I don't think Cheney wants to go anywhere and I don't think Bush wants him to go anywhere. Resigning now is just going to give more fodder to the Democrats. Also, just because we are the party in power doesn't mean we can't have a primary without a sitting president or vice-president running. We can and I think it will make 2008 interesting, which isn't a bad thing for this political junkie. And we might need a Republican without direct ties to the White House if Bush's approval ratings are anemic in 2008. Cheney doesn't leave until 1/20/2009.

Just like in Baseball...Sacrifice....Followed by the Resignation.. followed by the trial... A trial that ends with an acquittal because of the implications of the democrats misdeeds. It's just the perp walk they want. Remember Bush is a wimp and the dems. are going to take an advantage of this.
Bush is a wimp and now his administration is going into sacrifice mode to cover his butt. All at the expense of covering Clinton and his enablers butts. What a pathetic bunch of sissies we've elected into office. Just Pathetic.

Has there ever been a Republican president (or Senator) who crawled in the gutter to play this game? Clinton was the gutter master. He would have been in front of the cameras spouting his smart@ssed lies to refute Fitzgerald's indictments before Fitzgerald announced them.

Clinton would have been decimating Fitzgerald for weeks already on the partisan nature of the investigation. Clinton would be diminishing the nature of the possible crimes committed. Clinton would be decimating Wilson as a lying partisan hack. David Letterman would be doing weekly top tens on the insanity of considering Plame to be a "covert" agent commuting to Langley.

But GWB lives in the White House, not the gutter. I have no problem with either of their styles. What burns my @ass to no end on the other hand- is why do the prosecuters seem to have always given Clinturd a pass on huge crimes but yet seem to nail Republicans on the silliest, smallest, nit-pickiest little things?

So it's okay with you if a top level administration official discloses classified information to the press?

You have jumped to an unwarranted conclusion. There is nothing in any of my posts that would support such a statement. My post was directed at clarifying the difference between the fact of Plame's employment by the CIA being classified information and the requirements for prosecution under Title 50, United States Code, Section 421. Please refrain from putting words into my mouth.

Who knows what the outcome of this will be. All I know is that the allegation is that Libby claimed he heard about Plame from Russert - and allegedly that didn't happen. We shall see. In the meantime, all this talk about the White House being in real trouble is wishful thinking.

"So it's okay with you if a top level administration official discloses classified information to the press?"

It's not okay, and it's not okay when Democrats and liberals do it either. And when Democrats and liberals do it, it's not painted by other Democrats and liberals as the downfall of the Republic.

Did Libby have a legal basis to "mislead" the grand jury? What I haven't been able to find out is whether the prosecutor and/or grand jury were cleared to receive classified information - or if they were, was Libby informed that they had clearance to receive such information.

If not, Libby could not tell them of his earlier knowledge of Plame's job without improperly revealing classified information. He could only discuss "openly" obtained information.

"In my mind, I didn't know if she worked for the CIA" (or whatever his exact words were) was absolutely correct - in his UNCLASSIFIED mind. When someone has classified information, they can NOT confirm or deny that same information obtained from any non-classified source. They literally have to maintain two minds - one classified, one unclassified. In any non-classified situation, they have to maintain that they have no classified information which bears on any unclassified information they receive.

You seem to forget that Sam Waksal is in jail. The Stewart case was totally different.

Waksal being in jail has nothing to do with it. Stewart went to jail for lying about something that was not a crime in itself.

When Clinton's buddies were being indicted right and left (usually covering for him and Hill) did the media say his White House was in real trouble? I can't recall ever hearing that!

Her young stock broker is in jail too.

She lied, they lied, all for a lousy few thousand dollars.

She did something clearly illegal for personal gain.

Libby did nothing of the kind and I don't understand why he didn't get better legal advice BEFORE he spoke to the investigators.

If it's true that he attempted to erase his hard drive, that is truly dumb dumb dumb.

GWB looked mighty PO'd when making his indictment comment before leaving for Camp David.

Let's hope he stays this way for a while.

Libby screwed up. But it will be interesting to see if he chooses to accept a plea and let the whole thing fade away, or if he decides to milk the situation for all he can in terms of embarrassing Wilson, a man ripe for embarrassment and prone to spouting lies. Wilson on the stand under cross-examination would be delightful indeed.
