Kids with Fish Bowls: Latest Animal Rights "Criminals" By Debbie Schlussel
It's official: Your kids may be animal rights offenders. If they own fish and keep them in fish bowls.
In fact, if you live in Rome, your kids are breaking the law. In Rome, fish bowls are now banned--for being inhumane to fish.
Not surprisingly, the loons at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals--as opposed to the better PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals) have given the Rome city councilwoman behind this absurd new law, Monica Cirinna, an award for going "further protecting fish than anywhere else in the world." PETA has a "Fish Empathy Project." Is JAWS included? Yes, I have a lot of empathy for the sharks that have been eating beachside swimmers and surfers. Don't you?

Fish Bowl: Latest Crime Against Humanity . . . er, Animalty Said Cirinna, "It's good to do whatever we can for our animals who in exchange for a little love fill our existence with their attention." Is she having an affair with her goldfish? It certainly sounds like it.
Go here for more absurd examples of how our Italian friends and their government invade citizens' lives on behalf of animals. No wonder PETA likes that country.
Next, they'll be calling aquariums, "Weapons of Mass Destruction."

Yep, dear friends: its now official. Fish bowls are cruelty to fish. And next thing you know, the good folks at PETA will demand aquariums be categorized weapons of mass destruction. I take it back that Italy makes great pizza and pasta. They now ban kids from keeping fish in bowls. There's something fishy going on in Italy.

Since the law doesn't ban the ownership of fish as best I can tell, then they must proscribe a legal holding method, such as a tank that is X gallons per fish or something.
That being the case, if a family is unable to afford said aquarium, do the tax payers have to buy them one?
If such a law was passed in America you can damn well bet the taxpayers would get stuck with the bill.

Since we are allowed to cut them up and eat them I don't see any merit in the law.
But I personally wouldn't keep fish in a small bowl with no aeration.

But I personally wouldn't keep fish in a small bowl with no aeration. Me either. I normally keep them under wraps and on ice.

I heard the other day frog sweat is suppose to help queers with AIDs (so if you see homos licking frogs, it's not just some new fetish they've added to their "private" behavior) I wonder how PETA will handle this news. Will evil start killing off evil?

What about feeder fish.
My Oscar loves to bite their tails off first.

I thought the frog sweat was supposed to do something for the hamsters crawling in....... well anyway I'll bet the pety people would really be piss** if they knew I'd been swallowing goldfish 35 years ago.

More insanity from the article:
"In July 2004, parliament passed a law setting big fines and jail terms for people who abandon pets and since then local governments have added their own animal welfare rules ,many of which will be difficult to police."
"The northern city of Turin passed a law in April to fine pet owners up to 500 euros ($598) if they do not walk their dogs at least three times a day."
"The new Rome by-law requires owners to regularly exercise their dogs, and bans them from docking their pets' tails for aesthetic reasons."
"It also provides legal recognition for cat lovers who provide food for the colonies of strays, who live everywhere from the city's ancient Roman ruins to modern office car parks."
Wheeeee....look at us, we're so progressive!

Well, yeah, I think fish bowls are cruel because they usually have no filtration and aeration and are too small to maintain a stable nitrogen cycle. Everyone seems to think that goldfish only live for a few months to a year, but they can live up to 7 years if cared for properly.
Don't even get me started on keeping bettas in those tiny bowls.
I wouldn't try to legislate this, though, just educate.
