A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Union Cemetery contains graves and fieldstones dating as far back as the 1600's and up to and including present day burials. The Easton Baptist Church, which stands to the right of the cemetery was built in the 1840's, centuries after the first settlers were interred here (perhaps on an old church foundation?)

There are many stories attached to this plot of land, the most popular being that of "The White Lady", a ghostly figure that to this day her identity is unknown. She has been reportedly seen in and around the graveyard for over 60 years now. She appears in a white nightgown or wedding dress, and travels many miles between Union Cemetery and Stepney Graveyard (next to Our Lady of the Rosary Church) which is less than ten miles down the road. A fireman was said to have struck her after viewing the road in front of him take on an eerie red glow, and seeing a farmer with straw hat seated beside him in his truck. He looked up to see the white lady with hand outstretched and could not stop in time. He heard a thud and the truck was visibly dented. No sign of the woman was to be found however.

I gave the cabinet to my sister. She kept it for a week, then gave it back. She complained that she couldn't get the doors to stay closed and that they kept coming open. There are no springs in the door mechanism and I have never found that the doors come open. I gave it to my brother and his wife who kept it for three days and then gave it back. My brother said it smelled like Jasmine flowers, while his wife insisted that it put out an odor of cat urine. I gave it to my girlfriend who asked me to sell it for her after only two days. I sold it the same day to a nice middle aged couple. Three days later, when I came to open the shop for the day, I found the cabinet sitting at the front doors with a note that read, This has a bad darkness. I had no idea what that meant. Anyway, I ended up taking it home. Then, things got even worse.

Burlington, NJ, also claims to be the birthplace of the Jersey Devil. In 1735, Mother Leeds was in labor on a stormy night. Gathered around her were her friends. Mother Leeds was supposedly a witch and the child's father was the devil himself. The child was born normal, but then changed form. It changed from a normal baby to a creature with hooves, a horses head, bat wings and a forked tail. It beat everyone present and flew up the chimney. It circled the villages and headed toward the pines. In 1740 a clergy exercised the devil for 100 years and it wasn't seen again until 1890.

Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. It was not a groan of pain or of grief — oh, no! — it was the low stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe. I knew the sound well. Many a night, just at midnight, when all the world slept, it has welled up from my own bosom, deepening, with its dreadful echo, the terrors that distracted me. I say I knew it well. I knew what the old man felt, and pitied him, although I chuckled at heart. I knew that he had been lying awake ever since the first slight noise, when he had turned in the bed. His fears had been ever since growing upon him. He had been trying to fancy them causeless, but could not. He had been saying to himself — "It is nothing but the wind in the chimney — it is only a mouse crossing the floor," or "it is merely a cricket which has made a single chirp." Yes, he had been trying to comfort himself with these suppositions: but he had found all in vain. All in vain; because Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel — although he neither saw nor heard — to feel the presence of my head within the room.

When I was 14 (in the 1960s) my daddy decided that farming was his next big thing, and he bought an 18th century farmhouse and property from an eccentric old lady who was a story in herself, in New York ... and we hadn't lived there long before we were visited by The Ghost. (We named him Albert, for no reason other than that we had to call him something). Albert was a short man with dark hair, and although he manifested himself in various parts of the house, particularly in the kitchen/pantry, the only place he was seen was in the furnace room, a dim figure in the shadows that scared the bejezuz out of the handyman the first time he went down there ... although the house also had a poltergeist (which is not a ghost as you probably know, but an energy field), Albert never bothered anybody and we got used to him and his footsteps on the stairs or closing doors.

THE HAUNTED PALACE

BY E. A. POE, ESQ.

In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted,
Once a fair and stately palace —
Snow-white palace — reared its head.
In the monarch thought's dominion —
It stood there!

Never Seraph spread his pinion
Over fabric half so fair.
Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow —
This — all this — was in the olden
Time long ago —

And every gentle air that dallied,
In that sweet day,
Along the rampart plumed and pallid,
A winged odour went away.
All wanderers in that happy valley,

Through two luminous windows saw
Spirits moving musically
To a lute's well tuned law,
Round about a throne where sitting (Porphyrogene!)
In state his glory well befitting,

The sovereign of the realm was seen.
And all with pearl and ruby glowing
Was the fair palace door ;
Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,
And sparkling evermore,

A troop of echoes, whose sweet duty
Was but to sing
In voices of surpassing beauty,
The wit and wisdom of their king.
But evil things in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate!

Ah, let us mourn — for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!
And round about his home the glory,
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.

And travelers now within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows, see
Vast forms that move fantastically
To a discordant melody;

While, like a rapid ghastly river,
Through the pale door;
A hideous throng rush out forever,
And laugh — but smile no more.<

Hey Dolly,
I got my nickname around halloween time back at about the time I ran across FR (circa 1996.) One of my co-workers at time gave me that nickname adapted from my real last name. He still calls me that today whenever I run into him. Once I decided to register on FR, there was no doubt as to what my screen name would be.

I wish I had known what FR would become back then. I would have saved more articles and kept better notes so I wouldn't have to rely on my woefully inadequate memory. That's why you read things in what I said like "seems to me" or "as I recall." JimRob certainly can clear it all up. I'm not trying to cause a scene or anything. Just wanted to clear my own memory up.

FYI
Marine Stamp Ceremony Set

The date for the First Day of Issuance (FDOI) of the Distinguished Marines block of stamps, is set for 10 November 2005. The official ceremony will take place here in the National Capitol Region at a place to be determined. I am developing suggested COAs for CMC decision and your input on an appropriate location is always welcome.

This Distinguished Marines block of stamps consists of four individual stamps honoring John Lejeune, Lewis Puller, John Basilone and Daniel Daly. The First Day of
Issuance is the ONLY USPS and USMC sanctioned event. There will be two secondary ceremonies on Monday, 14 November, at Camp Pendleton and Camp Lejeune.

Due to the numerous affinity groups associated with these legendary Marines, and the stamp issuance ceremony, I encourage inquiries be directed to myself or Ms. Patsy Laws, Event Coordinator, United States Postal Service. She may be reached at 475 L'Enfant Plaza SW, Room IP-801, Washington, DC 20260-2207, (202) 268-2220. I will attempt to ensure everyone is kept informed regarding this historical ceremony. We will establish a web link on usmc.millater this week and we encourage you to forward this infor
mation to those you feel may be interested.

These Tales from the Coast were a very enjoyable read. Brought back memories of our short visit to that area last Spring and makes me want to return soon.

Love the story of your screen name. One of my continual curiosities is of the origin/reason for screen names. So many are so fascinating as compared to my mundane reason.

At various FReeper get togethers where there are FR "old timers" there are various stories as to the origins & the "way back when" stories.. I never have REALLY listened and I should have.

If not done yet, maybe some of the old timers for the origins of FR etc will do a thread for posterity/archive reasons. And yeah, a LOT of nostalgia.

I just got in & am "hurting" big time as a result of an accident on Monday, so will turn in & do the work for post in mornning. there seeming is not clock to punch, so will be content with getting it done, when it gets done & those who posted until the next post from me, will be pinged.

Sweet dreams & wonderful rest to my FReeper friends near & far. God Bless you & keep you safe until the morrow

Thanks Dolly. I hope you're feeling better. Was it a car accident or something work related? Either way pain is no fun. Listen, if you want to arrange something for us "old timers" to do, let me know. Doug From Upland and Deb are the only ones I remember from those days, but that was before the current registration system was active. I wasn't Gooleyman in those days and I'm sure most of them have gone on to bigger and better screen names. A lot of us just used our email addresses when we posted our comments.

Like I said, I wish I had kept up with some of their names and saved some of the postings. It was a lot of fun bashing the Clintoons and discussing Whitewatergate. AmazonGirl came along and started her Clinton History Files at amazongirl.com. A lot of good memories.

Maybe us "oldtimers" should do something for the 10th anniversary. I'm sure JimRob has records of who was around back then. I don't know when he had his first fundraiser, but I started kicking in not long after that. I'll have to look back at my old checkbooks from those days. A lot of people may try to say they were around back then, but JimRobs contribution records would verify whether or not they were. Back in the 70's a Cleveland Indians pitcher pitched a no-hitter and I heard someone say that to hear then number of people who say they were at that game, there must have been about 200,000 people there that night. The stadium was big, but not that big. Take care.

I am NOT an old timer but would be glad to maybe put together & post a "fancy" thread for a format for you all to catch up, chat etc. You & I could be the co=posters... you do the "guts" of the input & I can do the HTML.. no reason we can't do it here on Finest.. let me know what you think. I can find & you can find a few others to make suer we have some good old timers to contribute.

The accident was a bike spill.. I am a pretty experienced & savvy biker but just was careless on wood in the rain & had a really BIG accident. at my age, bones are a bit more fragile than when in 20s etc. I was lucky .. nothing broke but major bruises, sprains, pain

I have my Masters from ETSU, decades ago. I live in 'Boone's Creek' ... nobody has ever heard of it in TN since there's one in TX. Ours is the 'crik on which D. Boone killed a bar' and carved it on a tree (I have a twig from that tree, somewhere in my storage buildings).
