A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Union Cemetery contains graves and fieldstones dating as far back as the 1600's and up to and including present day burials. The Easton Baptist Church, which stands to the right of the cemetery was built in the 1840's, centuries after the first settlers were interred here (perhaps on an old church foundation?)

There are many stories attached to this plot of land, the most popular being that of "The White Lady", a ghostly figure that to this day her identity is unknown. She has been reportedly seen in and around the graveyard for over 60 years now. She appears in a white nightgown or wedding dress, and travels many miles between Union Cemetery and Stepney Graveyard (next to Our Lady of the Rosary Church) which is less than ten miles down the road. A fireman was said to have struck her after viewing the road in front of him take on an eerie red glow, and seeing a farmer with straw hat seated beside him in his truck. He looked up to see the white lady with hand outstretched and could not stop in time. He heard a thud and the truck was visibly dented. No sign of the woman was to be found however.

I gave the cabinet to my sister. She kept it for a week, then gave it back. She complained that she couldn't get the doors to stay closed and that they kept coming open. There are no springs in the door mechanism and I have never found that the doors come open. I gave it to my brother and his wife who kept it for three days and then gave it back. My brother said it smelled like Jasmine flowers, while his wife insisted that it put out an odor of cat urine. I gave it to my girlfriend who asked me to sell it for her after only two days. I sold it the same day to a nice middle aged couple. Three days later, when I came to open the shop for the day, I found the cabinet sitting at the front doors with a note that read, This has a bad darkness. I had no idea what that meant. Anyway, I ended up taking it home. Then, things got even worse.

Burlington, NJ, also claims to be the birthplace of the Jersey Devil. In 1735, Mother Leeds was in labor on a stormy night. Gathered around her were her friends. Mother Leeds was supposedly a witch and the child's father was the devil himself. The child was born normal, but then changed form. It changed from a normal baby to a creature with hooves, a horses head, bat wings and a forked tail. It beat everyone present and flew up the chimney. It circled the villages and headed toward the pines. In 1740 a clergy exercised the devil for 100 years and it wasn't seen again until 1890.

Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. It was not a groan of pain or of grief — oh, no! — it was the low stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe. I knew the sound well. Many a night, just at midnight, when all the world slept, it has welled up from my own bosom, deepening, with its dreadful echo, the terrors that distracted me. I say I knew it well. I knew what the old man felt, and pitied him, although I chuckled at heart. I knew that he had been lying awake ever since the first slight noise, when he had turned in the bed. His fears had been ever since growing upon him. He had been trying to fancy them causeless, but could not. He had been saying to himself — "It is nothing but the wind in the chimney — it is only a mouse crossing the floor," or "it is merely a cricket which has made a single chirp." Yes, he had been trying to comfort himself with these suppositions: but he had found all in vain. All in vain; because Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel — although he neither saw nor heard — to feel the presence of my head within the room.

When I was 14 (in the 1960s) my daddy decided that farming was his next big thing, and he bought an 18th century farmhouse and property from an eccentric old lady who was a story in herself, in New York ... and we hadn't lived there long before we were visited by The Ghost. (We named him Albert, for no reason other than that we had to call him something). Albert was a short man with dark hair, and although he manifested himself in various parts of the house, particularly in the kitchen/pantry, the only place he was seen was in the furnace room, a dim figure in the shadows that scared the bejezuz out of the handyman the first time he went down there ... although the house also had a poltergeist (which is not a ghost as you probably know, but an energy field), Albert never bothered anybody and we got used to him and his footsteps on the stairs or closing doors.

THE HAUNTED PALACE

BY E. A. POE, ESQ.

In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted,
Once a fair and stately palace —
Snow-white palace — reared its head.
In the monarch thought's dominion —
It stood there!

Never Seraph spread his pinion
Over fabric half so fair.
Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow —
This — all this — was in the olden
Time long ago —

And every gentle air that dallied,
In that sweet day,
Along the rampart plumed and pallid,
A winged odour went away.
All wanderers in that happy valley,

Through two luminous windows saw
Spirits moving musically
To a lute's well tuned law,
Round about a throne where sitting (Porphyrogene!)
In state his glory well befitting,

The sovereign of the realm was seen.
And all with pearl and ruby glowing
Was the fair palace door ;
Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,
And sparkling evermore,

A troop of echoes, whose sweet duty
Was but to sing
In voices of surpassing beauty,
The wit and wisdom of their king.
But evil things in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate!

Ah, let us mourn — for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!
And round about his home the glory,
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.

And travelers now within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows, see
Vast forms that move fantastically
To a discordant melody;

While, like a rapid ghastly river,
Through the pale door;
A hideous throng rush out forever,
And laugh — but smile no more.<

Doing great!

There is nothing wrong with my PC at home, I just don't have access to the internet at least until I can get my means of paying IS fees set up.

I still have a problem with the hookup for the Internet access.

I need to work on that too.

So until then my PC is nothing more than a glorified type-writer.

Dolly, that represents a tremendous amount of research and intellectual knowledge. It was fun to read too. I hope everyone puts on their "funny face" and goes out "trick or treating" on Halloween...the candy and goodie returns are fantastic!

Halloween, eh?

Guess I better unwrap my costume so I can greet the Trick or Treaters.

This is what I wore a couple years ago to greet the kids... Freaked out a few when they saw the dummy's hand raise up begging for candy. :)

South Carolina has several ghost stories.

When we lived in Myrtle Beach from 1966 to 1968, the Air Force had a marina at Murrells Inlet, where we sometimes rented a Boston whaler and went out in the inlet to fish.
[LOL - my participation ended rather abruptly the time my husband and I were seeing who could haul in the most drum. Not only did I cast my line into a huge bed of them first, catch quite a few more than he did, but he had me on anchor detail, and when I pulled that up, even hauled in a starfish on it - he did not invite me again..:))]

I was well familiar with Murrells Inlet, my mother from SC with roots going back to the 1600's. Knowing the story of Alice's Ghost, we one day stopped at The Hermitage in Murrells Inlet, a lovely grand old house. It then was made open to the public at set hours by the older couple who lived there.

They were the epitome of gracious and hospitable Southern folk, and after a tour of the whole house (their actual residence), including Alice's bedroom, they had us sit in the parlor to chat over iced tea and cake.

Sharing with them my mother's father had been a Methodist minister, they asked his name - Reverend Martin Luther Banks, my reply.
That generated instant excitement, and they explained they had lived in and retired from upstate, and years before my grandfather had been their pastor!
They even shared a funny anecdote about him..:))

It is a small and wonderful world of overlapping circles in which I live, now retired in another SC town where my grandfather was a minister...and both sisters (all of us reared in Florida; one now deceased) had married and settled in two others here, where he had a church!

As I have often related here, going around the town's Circle by the County Courthouse, half a block from it opposite the Post Office is the church my grandfather had in the 1920's.
As I go about this entire area, I often can truly "feel" the spirits and love of my grandparents - not as "ghosts," but as loving angels whose prayers for me *still* surround me.....an awesome thing, just as my prayers surround my children, grandchildren and great-grandson and any other progeny to come; and they always will...

==============================

"Alice of The Hermitage"

Impetuous and strong-willed, Alice Bellin Flagg committed the unpardonable sin of the mid-19th century: desiring to marry a man beneath her family's social station.

When her brother, Dr. Allard Flagg, the acting head of the household, learns of her infatuation with a common lumberman, he immediately sends her off to boarding school in Charleston, South Carolina. It is only a short time before Alice contracts a fatal illness and must return to her home, the Hermitage, in Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina. Upon Alice's return, she lapses into a coma and dies.

While her body is being prepared for burial, a ring on a ribbon is discovered around her neck. Clearly, Alice had accepted a ring from the lumberman as a symbol of his love. Not able to accept the reality of this, Alice's brother pulls the ring from her corpse and throws in into the marsh.

Yet, with her tragic death in 1849, Alice's story does not end. Thought to be buried in the All Saints Episcopal Church cemetery near the Hermitage, Alice reportedly has been seen in the area on numerous occasions in the form of a ghost. Witnesses of the young girl, dressed in white, say she wanders around the cemetery and the Hermitage searching for her lost ring. And although she died over 140 years ago, she is often seen by visitors to this day.

Believe, or not believe - that is one's choice!

We'd done the Smores routine for years on our annual camping trips with the grandkids and then one year we all got to talking and discovered that none of us really cared for graham crackers...that we just ate them because they were part of the traditional Smores receipt.

That evening, as the kids were all toasting their marshmallows on the campfire, I got a bit of a brainstorm and ~ ta-da~ a new tradition was born for our Smores ~ from that night on, instead of graham crackers, we now "Chips-Ahoy Chocolate Chip Cookies" and, boy oh boy, do they make one heck of a tasty Smore!!!

Try it!!! I'll bet you'll never go back to graham crackers!! ;^)

Speaking of campfires
