Miers withdraw plays into the hands of the Democrats
Senate Democratic Communications Center ^ | 10/27/05 | Senator Harry Reid

Reid on Miers Withdrawal Thursday, October 27, 2005

Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid released the following statement on Harriet Miers’ withdrawal of her nomination to the United States Supreme Court.

“The radical right wing of the Republican Party killed the Harriet Miers nomination. Apparently, Ms. Miers did not satisfy those who want to pack the Supreme Court with rigid ideologues.

“I had recommended that the President consider nominating Ms. Miers because I was impressed with her record of achievement as the managing partner of a major Texas law firm and the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association. In those roles she was a strong supporter of law firm diversity policies and a leader in promoting legal services for the poor. But these credentials are not good enough for the right wing: they want a nominee with a proven record of supporting their skewed goals.

“In choosing a replacement for Ms. Miers, President Bush should not reward the bad behavior of his right wing base. He should reject the demands of a few extremists and choose a justice who will protect the constitutional rights of all Americans.”

"So give yourselves all a pat on the back, secure in the knowledge that you have given the Democrats a bat to beat over the head of the next nominee."

Not quite. Ms Meirs was an unexpected windfall for the Rat Party. They were ecstatic, but Schmuck Chumer doesn't sound too happy today. The Libs are going to beat up whoever gets nominated, we might as well get someone we like.

For conservatives, the Meirs nomination was the equivalent of being told all year that you are getting a pony for Christmas and instead just getting the saddle.

I feel that Bush's next nomination will be filibustered.

So what if he is?

Republicans are split and the democrats will be able to use this issue for campaigning.

Oh no! Anything but campaigning! Run for the hills!

THE GANG OF SEVEN WILL STOP THE NEXT BUSH APPOINTMENT.

Be like the French! Surrender now, and avoid a fight! Once again the extreme right wing sinks the Republicans.

Yes, and let the war games begin. Just don't forget we have the Nuke option on our side. This time pull the trigger. Amen.

Hi Huck-

"...You think like a Spanish voter..."

That is a hilarious observation you made above! Long time, no talk since our discussion about hunting bear last year...

There is no appeasing the cunning and vicious Democrats on this Supreme Court issue, so we might as well promote a true and fair judge who will remain Constitutionally honest. I don't mind if things don't always go my way, I just want the judge to adhere to the intentions of our brilliant Founding Fathers.

Reid snuck into the GOP headquarters and exchanged talking points?

It is curious they sound just like the Democrats. Correction: like the Democrats AND RINO's.

My feeling is "Bring it On". If they've got nothing but insults, then they've got nothing. Right now they are experiencing the same emotions the Liberals have been accustomed to. Being defeated by the strength of conservatives principles and ideas.

"It's an astonishing spectacle. The unelected power-brokers of the far right have forced the withdrawal of President Bush's own Supreme Court nominee, before a confirmation hearing has even been held. President Bush's complete capitulation to the far-right interest groups is astounding. The ultra-right wing dominance of Republican Party politics is complete, and they have dealt a terrible blow to an already weakened President and his administration." ~ Ralph Neas

I don't want to be accused of using the democrats talking points, but this is exactly what happened.

The same thing has been happening to the Republicans in California for years. A small minority of far righters have pushed us out of politics and now the dems make the rules.

Look, this isn't a "pony," it's a SUPREME COURT NOMINATION. Nearly every radical change in the federal government over the last 50 years was accomplished by judicial decree. If we don't win the battle to restore the court to it's Constitutional bounds, we lose the war. It's as simple as that. A SCOTUS that follows the Constitution is in the best interests of all US citizens. Even the libs are better served by a court that follows the plain intent of the law. It may not be common knowledge, but there is a legal method of rewriting the Constitution. It's called an amendment.

And exactly how will a "true" conservative ever get out of the Judiciary Committee? Much less the rest of the Senate?

While the games are going on, Sandra Day O'Connor will be on the bench for another term.

Guess that's the ultimate win, huh?

Agree...
Hope it works out when the fight comes.

With 55/45 majority we only have to lose 6 votes in a tight race. Three of these are as good as gone if Bush nominates a strong conservative, Snow, Collins, and Chaffee. Based on past performance DeWine is also iffy. That leave 2... McCain is always good for a surprise. Specter is unpredictable. Graham jumped with both feet into the gang of 14 so he is suspect and there could always be a vengeful, resenter to vote out of spite (Lott).

Yes sir... we could have a good fight and get a worse defeat that Miers...

Hey Blue jays,

Good to hear from you. Let's hope we get a better pick this time! I'm glad those of us opposed to the Miers pick won the day.

That is interesting and it is something I had observed earlier but had refrained from pointing out for fear of being flamed by some overheated idiot.

Thanks for making the point!

My complaint is that there had to be a better way than jumping up and down, beating our chests and tearing out our hair like spoilt children who didn't get the pony they wanted for Christmas

What you described never happened. Get over it.

I got in to a fistfight with a democrat today. I was so outclassed. He hurt my hands by throwing his face into my fists. And to add insult to injury, he taunted me by stateing the similarities of my butt and his face.

who cares. you talk as if Miers was some superstar with a 90% approval rating amongst the american public - like Oprah Winfrey. so the conservatives took her down, the sheeple don't care, most of them don't even know who she is.

Where is Bush going to find the support in the Senate for a Conservative Judge? There are roughly 40-45 "bush-bots" who will support a conservative... it's not enough!

With the extreme rightwing and the Democrats teaming up Miers didn't stand a chance. Now we will be fighting a losing battle. It's a battle that the pencil pushers wanted so they can sell books and newspapers. The pundit will win either way now.

It sad but this issue has weaken the Republican majority. It is now consider to be an insult to be a Bush supporter... We are called names like "bushbots" and are being driven off this board. Too bad.
