I don't want to be accused of using the democrats talking points, but this is exactly what happened.
The same thing has been happening to the Republicans in California for years. A small minority of far righters have pushed us out of politics and now the dems make the rules.

California is dominated by the big liberal cities, like L.A.. Look at an electorial map and you'll see most of the rest of California is Republican. However, the Dems ARE the majority in California, and the Republicans won't be Republican if they simply adopt the Dem platform in a contemptible attempt to win. It's better to stand up for what's right until a majority of Californians see the error of their ways.
