Reid on Miers Withdrawal Thursday, October 27, 2005
Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid released the following statement on Harriet Miers’ withdrawal of her nomination to the United States Supreme Court.
“The radical right wing of the Republican Party killed the Harriet Miers nomination. Apparently, Ms. Miers did not satisfy those who want to pack the Supreme Court with rigid ideologues.
“I had recommended that the President consider nominating Ms. Miers because I was impressed with her record of achievement as the managing partner of a major Texas law firm and the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association. In those roles she was a strong supporter of law firm diversity policies and a leader in promoting legal services for the poor. But these credentials are not good enough for the right wing: they want a nominee with a proven record of supporting their skewed goals.
“In choosing a replacement for Ms. Miers, President Bush should not reward the bad behavior of his right wing base. He should reject the demands of a few extremists and choose a justice who will protect the constitutional rights of all Americans.”

I sure hope so! If being bi-partisan always means giving the Dems what they want, it's time to have a war. You can't have a return to limited government and conservative values by supporting the status quo. Minor tweaks to this law or that program won't fix this government!
George Bush should stop sleeping with the enemy. The RATs are at war with our Constitution and at war with Republicans. Why doesn't George Bush recognize this?
Marxist RAT Harry Reid suggests to Bush he nominate Harriet Miers, and Bush decides to throw Harry Reid a bone and does that. WTF???????????? Why in God's name does Bush sleep witht he enemy?

Of Course Harry loved her - she's a liberal.
How she was insulted and attacked by the right when she resigned. Now they have her there on the bench for a period of time.
Seems the so called movement conservatives were out to prove all the things that have been said about them by many who refuse to vote republican.

I blame Bush for not taking a chance in the first place with another nominee (I wanted and still want Janice Rogers Brown), but I blame many on our side for the tactics employed against Miers. It was all based on what people THOUGHT Miers MIGHT or MIGHT NOT do. The lady deserved a fair hearing. Period. She also deserved to be treated fairly. I guess she now knows how Robert Bork feels.

The Miers episode WILL be used against the next nominee. My complaint is that there had to be a better way than jumping up and down, beating our chests and tearing out our hair like spoilt children who didn't get the pony they wanted for Christmas.

In salesmanship there are always sellers willing to drop their prices without even trying to compare on a features and functionality basis. This technique is called "selling scared" because the salesperson is afraid they are going to lose to someone else.
Same exact situation here. President Bush needs to understand that he won and was returned to office with over a MILLION votes more than his competitor. He needs to act on behalf of these loyal constituents and nominate a true conservative who won't legislate from the bench.

Is this the quiet diplomacy that Bush feels will make things all better? Does doing the bidding of Harry Reid assuage the gang of fourteen and forestall the nuclear option? Is Bush trying to make friends, reach out to the other side and be the better man? or is he a patsy for peace like all the other appeasers that have driven the GOP into ground?

When I read this, I got a new image of Harry "Squint" Reid in my head -- that of the old-fashioned villain -- dressed head-to-toe in black, twirling his handlebar moustache, waiting for the train to run over the fair maiden tied to the railroad tracks!!

It was your enthusiastic endorsement of her in the beginning that made me wary of her.
If you were playing 'strategery', congregations... it worked.
If a nominee makes you have apoplexy, I'll know for certain that the right person was picked.
