Duquesne U. student punished for remarks about gays
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | Thursday, October 27, 2005 | Unknown

A Duquesne University sophomore said he will risk being expelled for expressing his view that homosexuality is "subhuman" rather than write a 10-page essay the university has called for.

Ryan Miner, 19, of Hagerstown, Md., was sanctioned by the university for posting his view on an online forum not related to the university.

He opposed an effort by other students to form a Gay-Straight Alliance group, an issue still being debated by the Catholic university.

"I believe as a student that my First Amendment rights in the Constitution were subverted and attacked," said Miner, who is Catholic.

"I fail to see how the University has any jurisdiction here."

You won't get any argument from me.

Quoting from the article:

"After his comments appeared online, some students complained to the school. After a hearing, the office of judicial affairs found Miner guilty of violating the University Code which prohibits harassment or discrimination based on, among other groups, sexual orientation."

***

Uh...no. This was expressing a viewpoint in an online forum not related to the university. And as far as I can tell, there was no effort on the part of Mr. Miner to harrass or discriminate.

Another thing...Duquesne University is a Catholic school...why would it in any way attempt to make some alliance with homosexuals since such behavior is prohibited under Catholic teaching?

"Girls humiliate guys who are unattractive or are viewed as geeks.

Guys humiliate girls who are not attractive, are fat or ackward.

Guys with hair insult bald people.
"

Really? That's not been my experience. SOME of each of those groups do SOME of the things you mention.

Decent human beings do none of them.

"Well, it is a private university and does have the right to determine what is and is not acceptable behavior for its students,..."

***

If he, say, spray painted anti-homosexual remarks around the school property, then yes. But this is a matter of a young man making comments in a forum not related to the school. Has nothing to do with behavior, but rather, whether or not this man's freedom of speech has been violated.

Sorry, but with a private school it's all a matter of what's covered in the contract between the school and its students.

Protected "class". Not equal rights, they have special rights. I don't care what anyone of these people say to the contrary.

It does not matter if Duq is Catholic, or Baptist, or even Presbyterian in its' religious heritage. What does matter is this young man has made them look really like the facists they are with this p.c. crap they are forcing down everyone's throat! If he does not think that homosexuals are to be welcomed anywhere they want to go, so be it. That is his choice and he has to live with the consequences of it. To go outside the university and post his thoughts is his right, and the university has absolutely no right to censure him. Where is the damned ACLU when you need those weirdos? I would tell the judicial board where they could stick a ten page report from me that they wuld never see!!

Duquesne is not a Jesuit school, it was founded by the Congregation of the Holy Ghost (boo!).

I would like someone in the athletic department to write a ten page essay explaining why our basketball team has had only one winning season in the past two decades...losers...

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

What is it with these supposedly "Catholic" universities? Must be the Lavender Mafia and other apostates in charge. Parents, watch very carefully where you send your college age kids.

Where's the first amendment? And the crap about "it's a private university" is crap. If they recieve a penny of gov money (aka as "our" money) they have no right to threaten, punish or expel a student for expressing his POV. Pretty amazing when every kind of vile pornography is supposedly protected under the first amendment, but an expression such as the student's - that homosexual behavior is disgusting - is not.

It is indeed a world gone mad.

Freepmail me if you want on/off this unfortunately very busy ping list.

You wrote: "Why can't the Church simply live by the doctrine it preaches?

That's the perennial frustration with Catholicism (I write as a Catholic.) The Church is so pure, so deep, so profound in its moral doctrines, found not in the mouths of Duquesne theology professors (ha! ha!), but in Conciliar documents and Papal encyclicals, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, fer Chrissake, literally, all based upon the Word of God ---

That's doctrine ---

But in terms of administration, it has been so cravenly tolerant, so long, in terms of every kind of deviation, behavioral and intellectual---

And of course, Duquesne is not owned and operated directly by the Catholic Church (Archdiocese of Pittsburgh) and probably not even legally or financially controlled by a religious order anymore. In other words, it retains the label "Catholic" while having slim to zero real spiritual or institutional ties to the Catholic Church.

Catholic parents who have spent bazillions of tuition dollars there should be able to sue for fraud, or at least for false advertizing.

Catholic students should be able to sue for educational malpractice.

Who you sue for losing your soul, I don't know. I don't know if you can haul Beelzebub and Moloch into a court of law...

And I'm saying that, as far as I can tell, based on the information in the article, it doesn't look like his actions violated any contract, at least not according to the terms indicated in the article.

Freedom of Speech has no meaning to American educators anymore. Political correctness, mental 'disposition' and the like are all that is important.

Our educators are right out of Stalin's 1950's Russian school system - they just don't know it.

You know I think we're approaching a time when the liberal legal community will legislate and reinterpret so many laws restricting how employers and workers can behave towards various minorities that corporations will severely reduce their numbers of corporate employees. All but the most essential people will have to become independent contractors who will have to sign lengthy agreements that explicitly state that their term of employment only lasts a certain number of months with options for renewal. These agreements will explictly state that the contract can be cancelled or not renewed without cause and for any reason.

Then if a gay person or a minority causes trouble and files legal complaints against the company or other workers, the company can get rid of that person who's filing complaints and limit the damage because he's an independent contractor with an explicit termination clause in his contract. Otherwise all this diversity garbage will eventually shut down productive business operations at many businesses.

I could not agree with you more.

A confused globe through and through.

For those uninformed who believe everything they hear in the media, Bush is the bad one. Dems are the heros.

It is the other way around.

Also, the example you cited here.

But this young man will learn something from defending his point too.

At least this place is consistently confused. Remember they hung the Son of God on a cross for telling the truth.

Same place our confused world ! Thanks

The mortal realm we are currently residing in is filled to the brim with lies and evil. It is our duty to try to find it not only outside but within, and fight it to the best of our ability. It's the only game in town!
