Miers Withdraws Supreme Court Nomination

WASHINGTON - Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be a Supreme Court justice Thursday in the face of stiff opposition and mounting criticism about her qualifications.

Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.

"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House — disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers — and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her."

We are going to have a fight, no matter who is appointed. So lets make it worthwhile.

Amen! Hopefully the President realizes this now.

I completely agree with you.

What many so-called conservatives here have accomplished is what the Democrats wanted all along and still do: a "moderate" person on the S.C. instead of an actual conservative.

And that's what these faux conservatives have accomplished, and assisted the Democrats in the failure to ensure a Constitutionalist is not only not nominated but not confirmed to the S.C.

That people are congratulating themselves here is more of the stupidity.

I figured some of you would be happy and doing cartwheels. I for one excepted her and think she would have been a good SCJ. Why anyone would want to go through the name calling and baggering she has gone through is beyond my understanding. I am sure Laura Ingraham, and Whiny Ann Coulter are happy. They have shown me their true colors and I will never support either of them again.

President Bush, I continue to support you!

Amen!

[...and watch the liberals take the congress back.. I am truly afraid that this attitude will get us back to another 8-12 years of Liberals controlling everything, some of you folks are either so spoiled, or so near sighed or too young to remember when every bill that passed was a socialist mandate.. Interesting times ahead fir sur..]

If the "moderate" Republicans jump ship on an originalist justice then the Democrats may very well regain the Senate. It certainly is plausible, but not necessarily likely.

On the other hand, I don't CARE which party is in power as long as the issues I support are being forwarded, and they are not being forwarded by the moderate Republicans, they are being IMPEDED by them.

I'm looking forward to simplification and rate reduction of the tax code in this next legislative session as well as an appointment of an originalist or strict constructionist justice. McCain, Snow, Collins, etc.. have been standing in the way of that ever since they opposed it during the Newt years and I would prefer that they were gone than to have them rewarded for placing an "R" after their name.

Yes, BUT the majority of Democrats in the Senate are demanding "a moderate" for the S.C. Just because Reid stood out as bait and otherwise took the attention off the actual gameplan involved, look what's happened.

I can't believe how easily so many people are played by the snake oil salesmen and women among us.

"Then you are in the minority. They are still delusional that Rov v Wade can ever be overturned and are letting this cloud their minds."

If Republicans start saying that R v. W can never be overturned, then a large chunk of the party goes back to what they were doing before that SCOTUS decision: staying out of politics completely. Many evangelicals were apolitical in the years after the Scopes trial in '25, and only came back because of the abortion issue. Not to mention many faithful Catholics started voting GOP on this one issue.

If the establishment of this party makes it clear nothing can be done about this issue, too much of the base will leave, and the party will no long be able to win majorities, and we'll be back on the socialist/welfare state path towards UE-dom.

There is no retreat on the abortion issue if you want to avoid socialism. That' the compromise, as I understand it.

What makes you think Bush withdrew her? With most Presidents under so much pressure that normally would have been the case - but not Bush. Once he makes up his mind he sticks to it. No, Miers is the one that caved under pressure IMO. And I guarantee you Bush is angry, and just to show people that he doesn't cave under cronyism charges he'll nominate Gonzales. Gonzales is a known quantity - at least more than Miers. I hope I'm wrong, but Bush doesn't fear political repercussions. He's done with elections.

What the bleached-blonde, ditzy Ann Coulter says doesn't count. She's a national embarrassment and needs to shut her ignorant mouth.

Please President Bush, give us Janice Rogers Brown for Christmas

When I heard the news, I knew I had to contact the White House. I hope you don't mind, but I liked the way you put it so much, that I used your sentence. It says it all!

"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents..."

Actually, that idea was floated on a thread here as being the easiest out in this situation. Nobody has to admit being wrong. Nobody loses face. No precedents set. Its a valid way out with no repercussions.

Someone probably read about it here and passed it on up. Kudos to whoever suggested it.

Yeah, hardcore conservatives are a**holes.

I'm glad you're showing your true intellect. A political outflanking from us "hardcore conservatives" has driven you to name-calling.

You are correct, she is not helping the conservative cause at all imho.
