Don't underestimate the appeal of fiscal conservatism. Arnold was even able to win California campaigning as fiscal conservative/social libertarian.

Oh, I don't underestimate it. It is a serious concern.

As to the borders, that issue was blown all to hell. Most of the country does not care and the rest of us cannot come to a compromise, so nothing will be done.

Vets are not perfect.

But now, think again about Kerry.

Suppose that he really had earned those Purple Hearts, etc.
(Remember that it was VETS wot brought him down on his war record).

But for the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, Kerry would have probably won, because the war hero icon was compelling to enough people.

Beyond that, MOST Vets were not jerks who came home and started calling their comrades war criminals. There are plenty of Vets in Congress. Imagine, for a minute that folks like Zell Miller, Max Clellan, John Glenn, yes, John McCain, and many others didn't have to fit that "Democrat" or "Republican" suit, but could instead run on national security, secure borders, tax and social programs that primarily benefit the Middle Class (as opposed to the underclass or the wealthy class), and could simply say: if you want religion, go to CHURCH. And leave candidates to vote their conscience and constituencies on certain social issues. This would be a very potent combination. You'd cleave away a lot of the best talent from both parties.

Anyway, it's just a thought.

Veterans all have something in common. They recognize each other. They served. They all took an oath to the Constitution young and all lived under a system of discipline and law. They are trained to form teams and accomplish the mission. I'd expect that the "collective action problem" organizing a bunch of Veterans would be lower than with any other large group of people.

Of course, if the President actually nominates a solid conservative, the conservative coalition will fly back together and there will be less pressing need for an alternative. But we're not there yet.

How did "Angie Harmon" become a key word on a Harriet Miers-related thread?

LOL. Have you seen some of the others that have been added? :)

That is not how the hard working Evangelicals are going to see it. There has not been an Evangelical nominated to SCOTUS since 1930, and we do represent a large percentage of the population. Currently we have 4 Catholics on the court, and that does not go unnoticed. Finally, those who are committed Evangelicals and familiar with the churches of Christ/Christian Churches are going to laugh in your face at the mention of her being pro-choice or liberal.

My jaw drops when I read this stuff.

So do 'evangelicals' get a seat due to affirmative action with no regard to merit? With Harriet now DOA, is another pushy papist going to elbow their way onto the Court and impose the Inquisition on us all? Or maybe The Jooz stabbed poor Harriet in the back?

Bush pressed forward an unknown lawyer who was his personal attorney and from his home state. IOW, a crony by any definition. She has a record of very liberal pro-abortion speeches.

After the nomination, Rove foolishly made reassurances to Dobson. Dobson came out with his I've-got-a-secret remarks and then had to crawl away. Next came Pat Robertson and his ACLJ stooge, threatening to rain fire and brimstone on any Republican who opposed her.

In short, the male Christian leaders made complete fools of themselves over a very dubious trust-me nominee.

In contrast, we see Eagle Forum and Phyllis Schlafly held their fire and made no real comments initially. Concerned Women For America, the top evangelical women's group with a membership that rivals or exceeds NARAL or ACLU, withheld endorsement and posed a series of about 17 questions they wanted answers to. After the recent pro-abortion Miers speeches were made public, CWA called for her withdrawal. That was this morning. It also appears that both CWA and Eagle Forum were behind the WithdrawMiers.org website that appeared this week.

In short, CWA and Eagle have some very smart women and legal counsel. And Robertson and his umbrella organizations are still a bunch of blowhard frauds and grifters. Dobson is easily flattered and manipulated.

I guess it means that women quite often are much sharper than men. At least among evangelicals.

I'm a Baptist. If Bush had tried to buy my loyalty by nominating, say, Jimmy Carter (pretends to be Baptist) to the SCOTUS, I'd be the first to get my gun.

Of course, if you want to think the pope, in league with The Jooz, beat Harriet to death with a bloody papal tiara, go ahead.

I never realized what a bunch a pathetic crybabies some evangelicals are. Flaky theology and a liberal entitlement mentality seem to go hand in hand. If you're an example of what Harriet had to offer on the Court, I am doubly glad she's defeated.

Are you trying to actually tell us that Miers was your candidate?

Nope......She was the presidents pick. I don't really know a damn thing about her and only a bit more about Roberts, since he actually had a hearing.

The process was screwed and there will be a price for that. It was a big mistake to not allow her a day or two to explain herself.

You will see a very small pie to pick from now. Bush may have to wait a while.

In the mean time, much of the country has had a look at Conservative governance, and they are no longer confortable with it.

That is the price. she should have had her day, and that is all that was important, whether she did well, or lost.

You really think you can get the likes of Snow or Collins voted out of office???

We don't need Snow, Collins or Chafee to vote our way. Let them vote against the nuke option and the nominee if need be with our blessing. We only need two or three out of Dewine, McCain, Warner, and Graham. And we only need them for the nuke option.

I'll take my chances with Nelson (NE) Pryor (AR) and even Byrd (WV) on the floor (not the nuke) vote.

If they vote against a conservative judge they can kiss their senate seats good bye.

Good point. And as I said, I wish her well. Now let's hope that Dubya does the Right thing and nominates a good constructionist with a good Conservative record. (JRB!!)

I am itching for a fight with the nutty leftist liberals.

"You think Reagan was elected by only the right wing? Smear me if you need to to make yourself feel like a "real" conservative."

Unlike you, I don't have to insult people to feel better about my politics. And when I start smearing you, you'll know it. I'm just telling the truth about you now, and you're so used to hanging with your moonbot buddies and back-patting each other for your 'pragmatism' it comes as a shock to find most of the GOP disagrees with it. And they do, or you Miers lovers would have had your hearings.

And BTW Reagan was elected by America, because America IS right wing, or you RINOs and Rats wouldn't have to run as right-wingers and keep your horns under your hats every time you get asked about your politics. The only reason we don't have a right-winger in now is that it's hard to elect one in the face of the constant racist-sexist-elitist attacks whenever a RINO faces opposition in the primary. But that's okay--what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

It was a big mistake to not allow her a day or two to explain herself.

She is the one that withdrew. No one kept her or the president from having their day but themselves.

If they really had faith that Miers had the ability to win over the Senate and the country the way Roberts then they would have stayed with the nomination.

There is no shame in realizing a losing cause and cutting your loses.

Nope......She was the presidents pick.
She was Harry Reid's pick. Bush screwed up when he put Democrats ahead of conservatives.
The process was screwed and there will be a price for that. It was a big mistake to not allow her a day or two to explain herself.
Miers was the one who chose to withdraw because the Bush administration refused to release relevant documents for the Senate to do its job. Bush thought he could be clever and short-circuit the process by offering a candidate whose only documents were privileged to the President. Blame Bush for that decision, not the people who rightly protested it out.

But she's not the first nominee to be withdrawn, either. Reagan did the same to one of his own. Ginsberg was never given his day to explain himself.
You will see a very small pie to pick from now. Bush may have to wait a while.
Good, Bush should have limited himself to the small pie to start with. Bush will not wait a while. Expect a solid conservative pick within the next 48 hours.
In the mean time, much of the country has had a look at Conservative governance, and they are no longer confortable with it.
No, Bush has been showing big government squishy governance trying to appease the unappeasable Democrats, and that is what the people aren't comfortable with. This is a repudiation of liberalism, not conservatism.
That is the price. she should have had her day, and that is all that was important, whether she did well, or lost.
The price was already paid at the point Miers was chosen. Bush should have never picked her. I think the cost would have been much higher if Miers would have been grilled in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Yes, there was a cost, and for that alone Bush should have never made this ill-advised pick, but he chose to pay the bill before it compounded interest.

Don't buy this whining about the 'unfair attacks.' They were few and far between, and that's now the party line of the party hacks to explain why their stealth nominee crashed and burned in the face of a united conservative call for a clearly qualified clearly constitutionalist nominee. But where the unfair attacks came from in this debate, contrary to these silly claims that she was 'miered,' were the sexist-elitist-insult lines of the Miers partisans. To hear them tell it now, that was just friendly banter, while using Miers' own words against her and pointing out her sparse record and credentials, that was a 'vicious attack.'

The RINOs here lost their last chance to keep the court RINO, and now they need to fall in with the conservative nominee. What they're doing instead is lining up to trash any conservative nominee with the Rats, and hoping they'll be able to wait out the right by trashing until they get another stealth lib. It's worked before, but it won't work this time. Too many of us are watching, we're mad as hell, and we're not going to take it any more.

I've read Kristol and I didn't see anything disrepecting. He just didn't feel that she was qualified or anywhere near the best choice for the job.

He doesn't like anyone in this adminstration

Kristol is a weasel .. always has been .. always will be

And you can have him
