Russia's population has shrunk by more than half a million people this year...
Russia's population — the largest in Europe — has been declining steadily since the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union, with increased poverty, alcoholism, emigration and degradation of the health care system blamed for reducing birth rates and life expectancy.
Demographers predicted that Russia's population will fall to 100 million by 2050, and could even drop to 80 million.

I am sure you are correct. Who would miss that? I don't blame them one bit for seeking something better. I do worry about the ones who fall into a bad situation, but I believe they are in the minority. I wish them good fortune and happiness.

Actually Tatarstan is considered predominantly Muslim Republic within Russia, and they are allowed to fly their state flag higher than the Russian flag. As well, street signs in Kazan are in both Arabic and Cyrillic lettering ( I have been there...).
Kazan was sacked more than a dozen times in it's 1000 year history- including by Ghengis Khan and his golden horde. As to whether their population was ever so large - do not forget that they lost about 26 million during WWII, and Stalin was responsible for executing or starving to death some 8 to 10 million Ukrainian Kulaks, and another 15 to 25 million other enemies of the state besides.
The revolution between the Red and the Whites, Leninists and Trotskyites was more costly for them than the Civil War was for the US (which was more costly for us than was WWII).

Good point. The statistics of Communist states generally aren't worth the low-grade paper they're printed on. Your observation reminds me of Pierre Chaunu,a French demographer who wrote in the 1970s that many African states inflated their populations in order to get more foreign aid (which the leaders then stole). Chaunu also thought that Chinese population figures were exaggerated, noting that the population of China under Chiang Kai-shek in the 1930s was estimated at about 300 million, but Mao's state then claimed a billion people in the 1950s.

Absolutely, took me 3 years, in the end I waited outside the embassy in Moscow and after success with the interview we headed back. That was Aug, 2004. Still dealing with wonderful DHS (USCIS)
and just got a notice from them after having our adjustment application in since last November; "we received your application, current processing time is between 270-360 days"
What a scam. Unfortunately there is no border for them to sneak across, I did everything by the book and paid 10's of thousands of dollars for it. This is why I am so angry at the illegal immigration issue here. I am becoming more activist about it every day. Will support the anti-Herndon, VA effort to use money (our taxes) I want to spend for my children's education to pay for welfare for illegals. Nothing makes me angrier. I remember some fictional nationalist in a Dostoevsky novel exuberant that Russia would be at 300 million by this time and the most powerful country in the world. How things change.

You are right and I'll bet it explains all, and more, of the population decrease.
Of course, nearly 80 years of mostly unrestricted abortion had nothing to do with their population decline.
Fertility rate in Italy is under 1.3 children per woman and abortion is illegal in Italy. Declining population is a problem all across Europe and would be in the US if not for immigrants.
Immigrants, Mormons, and guys like me with six kids....
