Jonah bails entirely on Harriet...
THIS IS WHERE I GET OFF [Jonah Goldberg ]
My official position on Miers has been to criticize the selection, but give her the benefit of the doubt until the hearings. In other words, bad pick but she's the nominee so let's give her a shot.
No more.
After reading this story I'm officially against Miers. I'm with the Editors , Will, Frum, and Krauthammer.
It's not just that Miers was in favor of racial quotas -- we'd pretty much known that for a while. It's the fundamental confirmation that she's a go-along-with-the-crowd establishmentarian. The White House says that her enthusiastic support for goals, timetables and quotas at the Bar Association says nothing about her views on government race policies. Yeah, right. She simultaneously thought what she was doing was great and important while also believing it would be unconstitutional if the government did the same thing.
The White House says she's an unchanging rock of principle. Uh huh. So have her opinions held constant since the early 1990s? Or have they shifted with the wind? If she's a rock, I don't want her. If she's a weather vane, I don't want her.
I just don't want her.
Start over.
Next!
Ditto. And I'm an SMU Law alumnus. I don't question her academic credentials or legal experience. I simply cannot support her because of her views on quotas, her advocacy of proportional representation, promotion of feminazism, etc.
That being said, the more lefty stuff that comes to light, the more likely it is that she will be confirmed by the Dimwits and the RINOs in the Senate.
"It's not just that Miers was in favor of racial quotas"
To be fair, I think she was arguing the administration's position, just like Robert's did on other issues.
But I'm still against her nomination.
This is the essence of what I've been to glean about her "style" over the past week.
Boy, did Bush screw up on this!
I don't care what Lucianne's little boy has to say, but when Robert Bork came out strongly against Miers, I paid attention. This is not good...
It's all downhill from here.
Yep, the crony appointment is just another open-borders, globaloney corporate drone.
Miers And Roberts: A CEO's Dream Team
But I never thought I'd hear Jonah Goldberg criticize the "establishment".
Hell must be freezing over or something...
Hmm. Before CA's Prop 209, I'd like to see a list of Lawyers, Judges, Politicians who were PUBLICALLY against Quotas and Preferential Affirmative Action. Defense or attack of Harriet Miers, aside.
Miers may or may not be a "rock."
But Jonah Goldberg sure isn't.

Yeah! We want someone more like Kennedy, Souter, and O'Connor.
Hey OF, how are ya?
Obviously this is a cover for the next one... a feeler if you will.
They must be planning to put up JRBrown.
It's a bluff.
Just a poll, how many of you signed the withdrawal petition?
From the article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/21/AR2005102102139.html
>>>>As the first female litigator at her law firm and the first female president of both the Dallas and Texas bars, Miers had an understanding of the barriers faced by those who are not white males, said former board member James Parsons III, who served on the board with Miers when she was named president-elect in 1991.
"When you come up hard like she did, you either pull the ladder up behind you or you leave the ladder down and reach back and pull people up," he said. "Harriet reached back -- that's who she is."<<<<<
Yeah, that sounds horrible to me.
/sarc.
In addition, he has more of a global view rather than the accepted Christian worldview. The global view is again closer to dad than either Goldwater or Reagan. He may not like this UN and its existing problems, but is prone to to having a world body solve some of our world concerns, including........maybe some of our own? He sees the need for a Palestinian homeland in parts of Isreal. He faith is rooted in a liberal mainline church rather than in a more evangelical home.
I'm not saying he's a bad man. There are many things I have doubts over, but I'm sure some conservatives sometimes scratched their heads over something Reagan did. But the fact remains, that to evangelicals, he was more marketed for what he believed and represented rather than the reality that the is. I'm frankly surprised that more evangelical leaders haven't drawn a line in the sand before now.
Jonah may or may not be a rock, but the Washington Post article contains readily verifiable facts about Miers tenure on the Texas ABA board. These reports to date are undisputed and reveal deeply troubling news about Miers views on affirmative action and "diversity." None of this gainsays our (I assume) shared views about the Washington Post's bias in its editorial judgments and practices.
I signed the support petition.
Agreed!
If you think that depth, intellect, and judicial experience don't matter as long as Conservatives get consistent "Conservative" votes from the bench......Miers AIN'T IT!!!!
Well Jonah, it looks like there will be "no soup for you" at Mamas for a long time.
