Stiffed by U.S., UN Asks Groups to Report on U.S. Rights Violations

SAN FRANCISCO, October 18 (OneWorld) - In an unprecedented move, a UN committee has asked human and civil rights groups to submit reports and testify on U.S. breaches of international law, filling a gap left by the U.S. government’s failure to submit its own report.

The 18-member United Nations Human Rights Committee, which reviews nations’ compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, began reviewing country reports Monday and will complete its session on October 24.

But for the third time since ratifying the treaty in 1992, the United States has failed to submit its five-year report to the committee on U.S. violations of the treaty.

The treaty, which entered into force in 1976 and has been signed by 155 countries, outlaws torture or degrading treatment, protects self-determination, and ensures that all people everywhere are treated within the law.

Without a U.S. report, the committee usually skips over discussions of U.S. compliance.

But anticipating an absent U.S. report, the Human Rights Committee took precautions this year.

Last August, the committee sent a letter to a number of U.S.-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the World Organization for Human Rights USA, requesting reports on U.S. transgressions of the treaty, to be used in case the U.S. itself failed to report.

Specifically, the committee’s letter requested documentation relating to, “the fight against terrorism following the events of 11 September 2001 and notably the implications of the Patriot Act on nationals as well as non-nationals; and problems relating to the legal status and treatment of persons detained in Afghanistan, Guantanamo, Iraq, and other places of detention outside the USA.”

"One of the most dangerous and corrupt organizations in the world, with the blood of thousands on its hands, has the gall to ask for reports of our government that has liberated thousands!"

Worth repeating from the article. Thanks for the link.

Screw the UN, the ACLU and the horse they rode in on. Neither is the social equal of used toilet paper.

We will still wind up paying 25% (or so) of the cost of the report. I hope that no locals are raped by the UN team.

Best possible outcome: The United Nations Security Council will deem the U.S. a threat and attempt to send in troops. We can bomb the UN headquarters in NYC and then have 18-acres of prime Manhattan real estate that could be turned back over to the private sector.

We should never report anything to this group of international thugs and we should never have ratified that treaty.

Why would I take anything coming out of something called OneworldUS seriously?

I decided in 1992 that they should send me a weekly report explaining the need to impose soviet style socialism on the successful countries of the world.
For the 677th time they have failed in their duty to do so, so we are appealing to everyone in the world to send in a report on their behalf, so we can issue more press releases about how awful they are.

Does this all make sense now?

Seems the UN is a little upset about being pushed regarding their own in-house scandles and criminal violations. This reeks of a bit of tit for tat.

In addition many of the items they are "concerned" about have been or are already being investigated, tried, and punished through our own systems! With much more transparency than any investigation into a the UN messes.

Sure this will be touted as another of Bush's failures, but if I read the article correctly we have not filed a report since 1992, so that's 1997, and 2002. Logically, Bush can't be held liable for the missing reports. In fact the article states the Adminstration filed the 2002 report...albeit very late. The UN wasn't happy with the report they received because it didn't discuss Abu or Gitmo. Sorry UN, those items are due in the 2007 report, which will demonstrate our effective system to timely deter and address international violations!

Well too bad you sorry bunch of losers who can't even manage a Peace Keeping force without the use of barbaric measures of your own! It is the height of arrogance that such a body as the UN to call upon left leaning treasonous bodies to bring indictment against the US. We are currently engaged in war and organizations who provide information to our enemies (remember the UN body was not/is not part of the coalition) is committing treason. It is time to stop the traitors and bring them to court, I as a citizen of the United States of America and a victim of their criminal acts demand it.

The treaty, which entered into force in 1976 and has been signed by 155 countries, outlaws torture or degrading treatment, protects self-determination, and ensures that all people everywhere are treated within the law.

This pretty much includes every country on the planet, maybe a couple on the moon, too.

Please note that 1) the treaty outlaws torture or degrading treatment, protects self-determination, and ensures that all people everywhere are treated within the law.
and
2) It "entered into force" (who writes this crap?) 29 years ago, so every country other than the United States being of course in compliance, makes it unneccessary to have armed forces of any kind.

And please note that the 18 unnamed member nations which comprise this UN Committee Have all won the Sister Teresa Humanitarian Award 29 years running...

America is under attack by various nefarious entities:

Muslim terrorism and Islamic oppressive demands

Anti-American Americans: Democrat Party, pro-socialist "liberals", neoMarxist/leftists, George Soros, ACLU, Farakhan & Jesse Jackson, et al.

The United Nations and Amnesty International
