Two recent reports from inside of Iran, if accurate, are very troubling.
Iran's Government Seeks Agreement with 12th Imam - in hiding since 13th century?
Kamal Tehrani, Rooz Online: a "reformist" website
In a formal cabinet meeting chaired by Iran's new presidents first deputy, the ministers printed and ratified an agreement with the Shiites' 12th Imam. In his opening remarks, Parviz Davoudi, Ahmadinejad' first deputy suggested that the cabinet ministers should sign an agreement with 12th Imam, the same way they signed a pact with the new president. The ministers collectively agreed and so there is now an agreement between the two! The ministers then questioned how the 12th hidden Imam will sign the agreement!Who is the 12th Iman?
The solution was resolved when the government's cabinet ministers agreed to ask Saffar Harandi, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance how president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad planned to take the letter to the holy Imam. Next Thursday night, Saffar Harandi dropped the signed agreement to the Jamkaran well, a spot that Moslem religious groups believe is where the Shiite 12th Imam is hidden. This well is also the resting place for tons of letters and requests from Muslim pilgrims. ...
The most important contemplating issue is that a large number of Ahmadinejad's close allies are talking about preparing the grounds for the hidden Imam's imminent manifestation and seriously and explicitly relate it to Iran's nuclear program. Based on informed sources in their conservative inner circles, they believe that resisting the international pressures and insisting on Iran's right to have nuclear capabilities will help the manifestation of the 12th Imam.
Some analysts believe that such talk among senior members of the new Iranian government indicates how deeply Ahmadinead and his supporters are influenced by ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi and his students in Qom's religious circles. The unprecedented presence of many of his strong supporters in senior government positions and presidential offices is a good indication of these claim.
According to Azarmehr, writing about Ahmadinejah's spiritual mentor, Mesbah-Yazd and his views of the 12th Iman:According to thhe Shiite version of Islam, the 12th descendant of prophet Mohammed, Mehdi or the Lord of All Ages, went into hiding when he was a child, some 1300 years ago. Shiites believe he will reappear again when the world has become full of oppression and tyranny. So according to Kamal, Ahmadinejad's cabinet is looking for the supernatural return of the 12th Iman to help them deal with the U.S.
For they actually believe in the spread of tyranny and oppression. They argue that if the Lord of All Ages is to appear when the world is full of oppression and tyranny, then we ought to help spread evil, tyranny and oppression in order to facilitate the coming of the 12th Imam, Mehdi. If these reports are accurate, how do you deal a government that believes this?

so, the Iranians basically just entered into a binding agreement with an imaginary friend. next week there's a tea party with a princess and all cabinet members are invited, don't forget your crumpets
Yep
Now can you imagine if the Bush Cabinet were trying to contact God for an alliance in the war on terror...
What would world reaction be?
One would hope it's a symbolic gesture, kinda like honoring the ancestors. With that bunch though...
Satan's offspring?
Don't forget the end of the article...
"They argue that if the Lord of All Ages is to appear when the world is full of oppression and tyranny, then we ought to help spread evil, tyranny and oppression in order to facilitate the coming of the 12th Imam, Mehdi."
The serpent already exists among us.
Idon't know about this.Is it just me or is there something peculiar about this whole business?Well, now I think about it don't our politicians do essentially the same thing? They enter into all these agreements with the people they represent and then throw these down a hole in the ground?
Quite honestly, I think they're all loony.
I wonder if the Iranian leaders recognize that anything they do is tyrannical or oppressive, so trying to spread it would kinda be contradictory to their supposed beliefs.
Bottom line, while it's good to try to understand what motivates others, even if it's way off of the wall, nuttier than a fruitcake, gonzo bonkers, it's far more important to stake your response to them to what they do.
Do the longterm affects of opium use include insanity? Because the lunatics are definitely running the asylum.
Yep, that's just about the place in time these murderous thugs belong, the 13th century. Let's send them all to hell where they belong instead.
So they're having formal meetings with a non-entity. What's the problem?
Well, I think Brooklyn Kid's on to something in his #11 post.

You, too, can communicate with the Shi'ite Mahdi if you just go to the Jamkaran Well!
I assure you, they are deadly serious -- with an emphasis on the "deadly."
Imagine if Brits really and truly believed as an article of the Church of England that some day the boat that took King Arthur away will return and King Arthur will resume the throne and rule England justly and prosperously until the end of time -- and you have something close to this Shi'ite doctrine.
It goes like this: There has to be a blood descendant of Mohammed to both rule mankind politically and be his infallible link to God's Truth.
They had 11 such Imams (so they say) and when the 11th was killed by political opponents, his son the Twelfth went into hiding, waiting for the right moment to come out and rule & preach again.
It cannot be that he died, because then mankind would be left with no link to God, and God would never do that to mankind. Hence, he's still alive.
Nor can it be that he had progeny who would rule, or they would have come out of hiding, proven themselves to be his heirs, and ruled.
Therefore, the twelfth Imam is still alive. Q.E.D.
