TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Police used tear gas to break up a rock-throwing crowd that had gathered to protest a planned march Saturday by the National Socialist Movement.

At least two dozen members of a Roanoke, Va.-based group that calls itself "America's Nazi Party" had gathered at Wilson Park just before noon and were to march under police protection.

Since the BOR is a restriction on the fedgov, I think your arguments for a narrow interpretation are empty.

It was a protection for the people to criticize government.

I went to school in the 50's. I attended Whittier Elementary in Toledo Ohio. The same school my mother and grandmother attended. I had some of the same teachers that my mother had. I was taught that the First Amendment protected our right to critisize government. It was the traditional meaning. It was taught with all the attendant horror of people being dragged away and never seen again because they ragged on the King. We were never told that it meant we could say anything we felt like saying. It wasn't even an issue nor was it dreamed of.

Do you have the same copy of the BOR that I have?

Funny, but the comment that you reply to (copied here to refresh your memory:
Free speech guarantees the right to speak out about your government without fear of retaliation. It has since been twisted to mean the right to say anything you please.)
is in agreement with the historical interpretation of the BOR. Which version are you reading?

Some of us went to school when they still taught American History.

I think you're going to be fishing for conspiracy theories that don't exist.

Toledo PD has had a lot of cuts made in recent times, and thus do not have as many officers as they once did, and it would have been unwise to directly engage the rioters any more than they did. I am sure that there is part of the contingent of rioters that wanted nothing more than to become martyrs and the TPD did not grant any such wishes today. When people were in the direct path of violence, they went in and did what was needed (they stopped the action at the gas station and the bar relatively quickly) but did not start a fight with the rioters for the heck of it. The violence was confined to a relatively small area consisting of a few blocks in northeast toledo and they did a good job of not allowing it to spread. I passed within a few miles of where this was happening earlier today and you literally wouldn't have even known anything was even happening just down the road -- the rioters were very effectively isolated and they should be commended for that.

Thank you for the info. I may have started the thread when I heard it breaking on FOX, but I had to leave for awhile. Not only did you bring me up to speed on the event as it actually occurred, but the tidbit about Paige Hopkins was quite interesting.

What distrubs me about this protest of the hate group of the Nazi March which was cancelled for some reason it seems to validate in some minds a reason to employ a roit of distruction upon the innocent and working folks...
A mob of at least 500 people threw bricks and rocks at police and vehicles, looted a bar at Central and Mulberry and started it on fire, and overturned a car at a North Toledo gas station and burned it.

It was identified that one of the hate groups were the Nazis who left and did not March when requested not too...

Now what was not identified was the other hate group who were 500 strong and I think in the future this kind of act should not be labled as an INCIDENTS but be should be visually recorded and when arrested identified as "Enemy of the State!"

***

I looked up Terrorist/Roit on google...

Some believe that individuals or groups resort to terrorism when other avenues for change, including economics, protest, public appeal, and organized warfare, hold no hope of success (also see rioting).

Therefore some argue that one approach to reduce terrorism is to ensure that where there is a population feeling oppressed, some avenue of problem resolution is kept open, even if the population in question is in the minority.

Others, for example the American intellectual Noam Chomsky, believe that terrorism is typically sponsored by governments through the organisation, funding or training of death squads and similar paramilitary groups, often under the banner of counter-terrorism. In his view the causes of terrorism include attempts to gain or consolidate power either by instilling fear in the population to be controlled, or by stimulating another group into becoming a hardened foe, thereby setting up a polarizing us-versus-them paradigm (also see nationalism and fascism). (Nicaragua v. United States is often cited by Chomsky as an example). Iranian support of the Hizbullah in Lebanon is also relevant in this context.

In the absence of state funding, terrorists often rely on organized crime to fund their activities. This can include kidnapping, drug trafficking, or robbery. But terrorists have also found many more legitimate sources of revenue. Osama bin Laden, for example, invested millions in terrorism that his family made in the construction industry building luxury castles for those making their money from selling the country's oil. The diamond industry emerged early in the twenty-first century as an important new source of funding for terrorism, and Islamist terrorist groups in particular have been very effective at procuring funding through a system of charitable contributions.

Toledo councilman (Democrat) making all sorts of excuses. "I see nothing. All quiet here. No gang activity here. Not sure how much of this is really racial."

Meanwhile camera pulls back from the looting and the police are standing around less than 2 blocks away. Who's the police chief? Lemme guess which party he belongs to...

You don't really need to. I live here, so I'll tell you. cRAT.

It shouldn't be taking place ANYWHERE. This is a group of punks/thugs/freaks who were looking for an excuse.

I have ZERO tolerance for this.

But... but.. but... The Blade is One of America's Great Newspapers. Just ask them (or read their front page - unless they changed it recently!)

Well, there a are a lot of people on several websites posting a lot of hateful and baseless allegations about FR and FReepers. I don't think I'm going to worry too much about any of these sites and I'm sure that I do not want their nastiness posted to FR. We know it's out there. They've been trying for years to get us shutdown on one pretense or another. So far we've beat them all, in the forums, in public opinion, and in the courts when necessary.
Thanks

Truthfully, I'm surprised. I googled the guy that started this and got a few hate sites that were pushing this. At first I thought the police were blind sided but now I don't think so. One article even said the FBI was gathering info.

Well dang! Mr Robinson. You could warn a girl! I googled Mr Szych and landed on one of those sites. My jaw dropped. I didn't know FR was that hated. It was pure hate.

In other words, Nazis announce that they are our enemies and want to see the rest of us dead. I'd call that a clear and open threat, wouldn't you?

Except that's not what the "Nazis" are saying. You are putting words in their mouths. If you can cite specific and clear threats against particular persons, you can initiate criminal proceedings with ease. In fact, this has been done quite often against "Nazis" and anyone else issuing threats. Simply saying "I am a National Socialist" is not a specific threat in any legal sense whatsoever. What we have here are radical leftists making arbitary definitions of another ideology, and then using their definition as justification to kill or harm others before they have in fact done anything to allegedly live up to the leftist "definition" of National Socialism, which is a bullsh_t definition anway- you really think Hitler would have gotten anyone to follow him if he had advocated his own enemies definition of what National Socialism was? Don't be absurd.

Communism killed many, many, many, many times more people than Nazis ever did, and yet no one is advocating that we take away the free speach rights of communists, simply because according to some anti-communist's theoretical definition, "communists announce that they are our enemies and want to see the rest of us dead." Let's punish people for what they actually do, please, not for what your feverish imagination claims they might do in some alternate universe. The fact is Nazis are a tiny and despised minority and are a threat to no one. Going on the body count alone, leftists, communists, and "anti-nazis/anti-fascists" have killed a lot more people than nazis have, so when do we start rounding up all the "anti-nazis", for "public safety"? If we are going to go by guilt of association, let's start with those who themselves are advocating violating the Bill of Rights, since after all what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander; let's have those shouting for censorship the loudest, begin by censoring themselves, since they are a far greater real threat to our civil liberties than a handful of nazi nobodies are. Pathetic nazis have no power to silence us. The government does.

A good friend of mine said that the Toledo Blade should be called "Coins and Boings" because all it talks about anymore is the Tom Noe/Bob Taft coin scandal and catholic sex abuse cases. I think they had a competition against the NYT/Abu Ghraib about how many times in a row they can repackage the same news with a new titillating headline. Having had some indirect experience with their reporters, I can safely say they are almost entirely unethical SCUM that will do and say anything to get a story -- but I think that's SOP for most major papers these days.
