MONTREAL - Canada's foreign affairs minister said Thursday that the country badly needed more immigrants to replace aging workers who are headed for retirement.
Pierre Pettigrew said that increasing the population to 40 million by welcoming more immigrants would help foot the bill for new infrastructure, such as roads and bridges.
"This is a vast country, the infrastructure is expensive and it's a bigger country than the United States is," Pettigrew said. "I am saying that if we were 40 million Canadians, that infrastructure would not be necessarily a lot more expensive, but we would be more (people) to foot the bill."
The minister, in comments to reporters after a speech in Montreal, said Canada was built by immigrants and that's the way it would continue to be built.
Canada's population of just under 32 million has grown by only three million in the past decade. The federal government is set to unveil a new immigration plan this month that would open its doors to 320,000 skilled immigrants a year by the time the plan is fully implemented in five years.
Fortunately, we have spares.
Send 'em a few million of our non-english-speaking "migrant workers".
I did see a surprisingly large number of Mexicans last time I was in Vancouver.
Don't forget the 10,000 or so OTM (other than mexicans) that come into the country each month. they can go, too.
(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
The sins of socialism is the need for more canon fodder to support the ever increasing "entitlement" population. Canada can take our malcontent Follywood crowd. The Euroweenies have their Muslims.
We need more here too. Our entitlement programs will be in deep trouble without more immigrants. Of course, we could just get rid of those, but who wants to do that.../s
Perhaps Canada should consider a more generous visa program for this other North American country with so many millions of young workers willing to move North.
I didn't forget them; but they are the ones pushing for American citizens to abandon their language, borders, and culture.
The rest are trying to blend in.
Get rid of the troublemakers, first.
We could start non stop service from the southern border to any point in Canada. We could also pick up the cost of transportation. Happy to help out.
Right. If the native Canadians were doing a better job of being fruitful and multiplying, Canada wouldn't have to resort to this.
"Canada - Mexico; Mexico - Canada. Now why don't you two sit down and discuss this amongst yourself."AWB
Send the illegals from Mexico there!
. . . and make sure you don't ban abortion. We don't need those children we have lost over the past few decades.
Remember the good old days when that role used to be filled by these things called "children"?
Go North, young liberal!
You got a point there :o)
That was my first thought. A country didn't have to import people in order to take care of the old folks. Or the infrastructure, for that matter.
