75% Chance Miers Nomination is Withdrawn (John Fund says on John Batchelor Program)
John Batchelor Program - WABC Radio ^

Posted on 10/14/2005 7:23:47 AM PDT by new yorker 77

I was listening to the John Batchelor Program on WABC Radio in New York last night.

He commented on the process that went into nominating Miers and added that the likelyhood of her nomination withdrawn has grown.

It has grown from 5% last week, to 30% end of last week, to 50% beginning of this week, to 75% last night.

Fund was on the program to comment on his op-ed piece:

How She Slipped Through Harriet Miers's nomination resulted from a failed vetting process.

All Fund kept saying was, "Watch the trend."

Internal polling of GOP voters must look very bad.

what's the name of that site where you can bet on politics

i made a few hundred dollars last year

i bet when the odds against bush went way high, right after the false "exit polls" went out

I think I got 2 to 1 or something amazing like that

anyway, i've got to find my way back there and at least check the odds on Miers

might be inclined to try my luck again

Wasn't Anthony Kennedy Reagan's third nominee for one seat? Honestly I don't remember (I know he was at least the second nominee for that seat), either way it didn't weaken Reagan.

Forcing the President to withdraw her name now will weaken him and that is not a good thing.

But if it's the Republicans are the ones doing the forcing, then it will strengthen their hand to get a better justice. I'm more concerned about that than about Bush's political fortunes.

Her chances looked good a week ago. Since then there's been a drip-drip-drip of accounts, rumors and stories that don't put her in the best favorable light. And support for her among conservative opinion-makers is decidedly hostile at worst and at best non-commital. Its a not a good sign for a candidate when you can't count on your own base.

The only real chance she gets pulled is if a scandal crops up in the MSM some sort of nannie-gate or the ABA comes back with a Not-qualified rating. This might give enough people room to go to Bush and ask to pull the nomination. However, Clarence Thomas received a split qualified, not-qualified recommendation from the ABA, when put up by Bush 41. Also, if you hope that you will get a Lutig or Brown in replacement keep dreaming. A weakened Bush, will nominated a known moderate judge with experience.

That pick didn't work out too well.

Apparently there are some involved in the nomination process who have not been pleased with the Miers selection from Day 1 of it being made an option.

All that's needed is for maybe three Republican Senators on the Judiciary Committee to let the WH know they won't let her through. If they won't let her through, the Dems will pile on and vote "no" too. This is great news that I've been expecting. WITHDRAW MIERS NOW!

Pundits are not President Bush's base. I can definitely state, with facts to back it up, that Bill Kristol is NOT part of the President's base, and never has been.

The base are the grass-roots GOP (note that phrase...GOP) and pretty much support the President's choice.

Now if you want to make a case that a majority of conservative pundits dislike this choice, that's different.

And What kind of odds are the Vegas book makers offering??

Nothing in the US Constitution authorizes either polls or protests to deny an appointee the opportunity to be heard before the Judicial Committee, nor before the entire Senate for that matter.
