Pundits are not President Bush's base. I can definitely state, with facts to back it up, that Bill Kristol is NOT part of the President's base, and never has been.

The base are the grass-roots GOP (note that phrase...GOP) and pretty much support the President's choice.

Now if you want to make a case that a majority of conservative pundits dislike this choice, that's different.

You have support for this contention anywhere?

You must admit though that it's not just pundits, as evidenced by the massive split on this site. Where people with principled disagreement are characterized as "Pelosi-like" and every conservative commentator who has provided great fodder for discussion over the years must be discredited and ridiculed.

There was a small amount of that with Roberts but this is like a tidal wave went through our side. You can't just write that off as the work of a few pundits.

If you mean "GOP" as those who are registered, donated, and have voted Republican for 3 decades, then you can count me OUT of your precentage. I don't "pretty much support" the President on this choice. I have been a loyal supporter of Bush until very recently, and this was the last straw.

On the other hand, if by "GOP" you mean people who pull the lever for "Republican" regardless of principles, you may be right.

Your repeated contention that only "far righters" and "libertarians" are against this nomination is wrong. Using terms like "far right" etc. only mimics the MSM, and tells where you put yourself.

So you assert that the base has embraced excluding merit and experience and substituting ecclesiastical and secular faith for reason. Nice broad brush in which to slander millions of Americans.

Nope, don't think so. Check this poll from a moderate website, Instapundit.
