I have a feeling that this speech is why Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society and Jay Sekulow support her so strongly. Why the transcript of this speech was not released earlier is a mystery. I await the release of the full transcript instead of excerpts.
Um, the 5 Federalist Society people on her staff were hired by Gonzo, NOT HM!
While she didn't hate them enough to fire them outright, reports are that she wasn't too happy to have them there, either.
And, I see that you missed the REAL juicy bit of this Drudge report. She apparently called the FS a "politically charged organization", while saying that the NAACP was NOT politically charged (shortly after they torpedoed Bork, among other nasty things that they did - ALL political).
Also, note in her 2005 speech all of the vague platitudes and referring to her audience in a distant, arms-length way. It is clear from her words that she does NOT agree with the group's philosophies or principles.
This nomination is a disaster, and needs to be rescinded ASAP!
flip flop
Politicians give speeches to all sorts of groups they want votes from, and then don't follow through on their campaign promises. Case in point right here.
Harriet Miers is famous for saying nice things to everyone to grease the wheels. She keeps a special jar of M&Ms in her office and welcomes anyone to come in and help themselves.
Also, working for Bush, part of her job is to keep Bush's constituencies happy. Would she be likely to insult the Federalist Society?
But, when did she join the Federalist Society? When did she DO anything to promote their views? I'd be interested to know if there is anything more in this speech than pleasant platitudes.
By then, everything she was saying was mindful of her possible candidacy for a Judgeship. No one accuses her of stinting when it comes to saying that which, at any given time, happens to be politically expedient.
"Some of my best friends are Federalist Society members."
LOL.
I'll let you fill in the blanks.
I wouldn't necessarily call that praise. There is no real value assessment there. Just a finding of fact that they add to the debate.

Not to me. This is an amazingly savvy and patient White House. Let the enemy fire its salvos; it makes the targets for the return fire that much easier to lock in on. Look for more of the same, little by little, the ammunition efficiently used, and deadly. The last missles are usually launched by the winning army.
Gee! A politician telling a group what they want to hear!
THE FEDERALIST SOCIETY in Dallas was only founded in 1989.
At the time it was a group of political operatives, very different from the FEDERALIST SOCIETY we know today.
The fact that Ms. Meirs has given numerous recent speeches and has many members on her staff says a lot more than her earliest comment.
FYI-Bork is on Chrisy's program right now for those who are interested.
I think it is interesting and important to note the relative proportion of membership in various religious groups on the Supreme Court. I think that would make Harriet Miers the only evangelical on the court.
And that could be why some conservatives, consciously or unconsciously (Federalist Society)oppose her. So, if Harriet Miers is confirmed, she will be the only evangelical on the U.S. Supreme Court. faith and trust alone
Because I trust the President and that brings me to trust his choice of Harriet Miers.
You cherry picked.
disingeniuous
This is interesting, especially because Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham are telling us every 5 minutes that Meirs has publicly denounced the Federalist Society.
Didn't I read something somewhere about a Federalist Society "coup" over this nomination? It was in one Legacy Media outlet or another. (They all look alike to me.)
Oh, they're not? From the Pavlovian response of democRats whenever the name of the group is spoken, you could have fooled me.
